Anyone Pass REG on Second Time?

I took REG May 30th and found out, sadly, on August 17th, that I failed it with a 62. The only other one I failed was AUD, but I had gotten a 71, with that and then passed it the second time with a 78, so this low score with REG is a little new for me. I have until February to pass it until I lose FAR, so I don’t really have any time to fail it a second time. I was wondering if there was anyone else who failed REG the first time with a low score but was able to pass the second time? If so, how did you study differently or what did you do to ensure that you passed the second time? Also, how long did you give yourself before you did a retake? I’m thinking since I didn’t really study all summer, I’m going to need a bit more time than I think but don’t want to give myself too much time.

    FAR - 76 (lost credit, then 79)

    AUD - 71, 78

    BEC - 78

    REG - 62, 74, 73, 82! whoo!

I failed reg first try with a 73…

Second attempt (just received score in August 2017) passed with 86.

I was never good at Tax (horrible professors, Tax 2 in college was fully online and did not learn a thing)…. For my first REG attempt, all I used was Becker. My score report indicated I did weak on sims, and strong on MCQ. I failed with a 73…

So for my second attempt, not only did I re-do all becker MCQ's and sims, I also purchased Ninja MCQ and did a bunch of tax MCQ's and Tax sims (probably did ALL sims, because that was my main focus on my second attempt). I guess this worked out for me because I passed it with an 86.

Overall, I'd say my second attempt took 2 months of review. Ninja MCQ definitely bumped my sim scores up because I thought I did much better on the sims my second attempt.

    AUD - 82
    BEC - 81
    FAR - 84
    REG - 86

Just checked my score and I got a 73 on my first attempt of the REG. Such a bummer. First, did anyone get a report of what there weaknesses were? because I did not. I got a report for the BEC (which I passed) but not for REG that was just released (which I did not pass). Do they not tell you what you are weak in if you don't pass? I believe it was the SIMS because the MC seemed fairly straightforward. I was especially sad about the research question as I don't believe I got it and is such a huge point deduction if you miss it.

Second, any advice on how to study a second time for REG? I really hated the Gleim material for REG but have been happy with the BEC and FAR material so far. The REG instructional material was so cryptic and onerous. Anyone else other than DBMonster have a better experience with other REG studies? Becker is too expensive for me but will look into Ninja tax sims. But also any advice on attacking the same material in a different way? Also the Gleam sims seemed simplistic in comparison to the actual REG CPA test sims. Are there more realistic sims that anyone believes is more similar to the actual test out there?

Third, trying to figure out timing of study. I am currently in the middle of FAR study and while I had planned on taking it on Sept 7th, will need to postpone till October because I am not covering chapters as quickly as I should. My next one was AUD but am wondering if I should try to fit in another REG attempt before starting AUD study material? Or just go for AUD first before re-taking REG?

Last, I had a year to fit in the tests and have till end of Oct to take all 4. I won't be able to fit in the AUD by end of Oct. How do I re-schedule with nasba to take the AUD once out of time and re-take a failed exam? How much is re-taking a test? Thanks

    Hey Clockwork –

I'm sorry to hear about the result. Keep going – you can pass REG.

REG was my last section and I got a 74. I gave myself a couple of months to re-study before taking it again under the new format. To re-study, I read through the entire Becker book again. It was to the point where I was telling family that I didn't know what else to study because I could finish sentences after only reading half of them. I also purchased Ninja MCQ/Sims. I did many, and I mean many, MCQ. I also did all of the simulations and tracked my scores to see if I was improving. Lastly, a couple of days before the re-take I watched several Youtube videos on 1245/1250/1231 capital gains, individual and corporate AMT, and other minor areas such as itemized deductions that I figured I could use a refresher. I passed with an 83.

    Hope this helps. Goodluck!!
