Are earplugs allowed in testing center?

I have read previous posts recommending wearing earplugs to prevent distractions while testing, but I just noticed on the NTS that earplugs are among the list of prohibited items.

Do they not enforce this one?

Or, do you put them in your ears before going into the testing center?

    How is this handled?

    thanks!!

You can take in one pair of foam earplugs. They also have the headphone things that look like the ones at the shooting range, but I have never, and would never, put a pair of those on. I've NEVER seen them clean them so, yeah, No! Head lice ain't worth it! I found it best to “practice” putting the ear plugs in before the exam. You have to squeeze them and roll them around then shove them in your ears. If you don't do it right, they are worthless so bite the bullet and buy the jug of them for $7 at Wal-greens or Wal-Mart. Those things are a one shot wonder but worth it if you get seated next to someone taking a test that requires them to type non-stop for 4 hours or someone who coughs or sneezes through the exam.

Unless things have changed the one pair of soft earplugs were allowed when I took the exam. You have to present them in their packaging to the prometric staff to be checked. I got then from my husband, and even used them while I was studying.

The squish ones cannot have strings attached if you have some of those laying around like I did because my husband has them at work. They didn't stop the noise so I used the one big clunky ones they provide. I didn't think about the lice although I should have. Good point.

The Prometric center I use has ear plugs available upon request. They were new in a sealed pouch and worked well during the exam.

On the NTS it says Prohibited items – Earplug (not provided by Test Center).

I am sure we can ask them for earplugs as they must be providing them upon request.

    FAR 05/27/14; 786/110 - Done !
