At a crossroad with my career

    I worked in public for over two years before I changed to corporate a few months ago. Corporate is fine, but there isn’t much of a career in terms of progression. It’s more general ledger accounting. Im only a staff here but the pay is decent. I’m halfway through getting my CPA, and only need to pass two more sections.

    I’ve been asked to go back to my previous firm as a senior. The firm has less than 10 employees and doesn’t do any audits,compilations, or reviews. They specialize in small business accounting and taxes. I would hold a supervisory role and be on partner track.

    However, I want to become more of a specialized tax accountant, like federal, international, or M&A tax accounting. I won’t get that experience at the small firm. Most of tax experience won’t be as technical as I’d like.

    I have an interview with a large regional firm for a staff position, which might help realize that career path. Ideally, I want to get into B4, but I’m finding that it’s not easy to woo them. Would a senior position at the small firm he’ll get me into B4?

    Would it be better to get supervisory experience at the small firm, go to a large regional as a staff, or hold out for a position at a B4?

    If you opt for the supervisory experience, youd be pigeonholed in terms of both limited technical experience and an inflated career path which would make it difficult for you to move later

    I agree with you, which is why I rejected the offer. Interviewing with the large regional soon.
