Auditing Experience

I have a pretty comfy job in private industry but would love to explore the auditing profession without having to leave my current job (dip my toe in the water so to speak). I know I probably wouldn’t be able to do this with a big 4, but does anyone think there is a possibility that I could help a public firm out during busy season remotely? The work would have to be confined to after hours during the week and on weekends, but I’d actually do it for minimum or no pay just to get the experience. Just want to get some opinions on how realistic this would be before I start reaching out to people.

So you have no experience in audit..yet think you can learn auditing on your own remotely??

I'd say you have zero percent chance getting hired this way..and are underestimating the difficulty getting a job in public on its own merits..

Firms dont want part timers..they want salaried people they can use for several years and dont have to train.

Your idea might be plausible if you had 4-5 years experience..and could come in and run the audit unsupervised..

FWIW audit is incredibly boring..youre not mising much..lots of check lists and BS disclosures mainly..

    Hi @JimmyDugan,

I am sorry but I agree with @Adam. Without experience and ability to run the audit unsupervised you would be the reason why the audit takes longer to complete. The audit manager and seniors would either a) spend time to re-do your workpapers or b) spend time answering your questions or a and b. If you are happy with your job, I wouldn't recommend audit.

I appreciate the feedback from you both and I'm glad I brought it up here. I still do some corporate returns on the side for the CPA I worked for briefly and didn't know if a similar arrangement in audit was a possibility. Sounds like it's not feasible.

You can try to get a rotation in internal audit, if your firm has that function. Its basically the same as external, except less regulated. You will get exposure to SOX, COSO, US GAAP, assist external auditors, and whatever else they do. This experience translates well into accounting firms if you are looking to move into public. Good Luck!
