Becker – is it really worth it?

I have tried other CPA review course to he point that it fells like I’m collecting them. I have the option of purchasing Becker for 1/2 off retail. My question, is it really worth it? I suck at self studying, which is probably why I haven’t passed yet. I am marginally attracted to the fact that Becker will make me read (or at least skim) the book as I do all the highlighting. Any suggestions or feedback will be appreciated.

The highlighting is a catch 22, since you mentioned it. I found that the more I highlighted, the less I actually read because I was assuming that I read it while I highlighted, which wasn't actually the case.

I have Becker. It has good points and terrible points. I did manage to pass BEC with Becker after failed attempts with Wiley. I like the variety in the MCQ and you can purchase extra simulations through their final review. I don't like how long the lectures are, as I have a full-time career and am a mom to a special needs son. I can't stay in place long enough for the lectures and the lectures have a tendency, IMO, to move really – really slowly.

Is it a good program? Yes. You just have to tailor it, in a sense, to how you learn best. I have to focus on MCQ and sims (because I suck at them). I also started using the Ninja audio, as it is easily downloaded and portable.

    Good luck in your decision!

I have used Becker exclusively for 3 parts and had no trouble passing. I think that Becker actually over prepares you for exams. But you have to be willing to put in the time and watch the lectures/do the homework.

Just like any of the products it's only as good as you use it. Becker has a pretty good methodology but won't magically teach you the material, still have to read the book and take notes.

    R - 90 2/27/2014

If you aren't good at self study maybe another self study course isn't the right option for you. I have used CPA Excel and it is working very well. Maybe you should try to take an in person course. Half off Becker is still expensive. And it expires.

Do notes really help that much?

To date, I've just been reading the book, then taking some MCQs. I really don;t feel like paying to take FAR again.

I, personally, do not believe Becker is worth the money. Do TONS of people pass the exam using it? YES. Does that mean it is the best option? Absolutely not. Becker simply has the money to partner with these big firms and universities and basically cram their material down the accounting world's proverbial throat.

Someone above mentioned that it over-prepares you – I would argue that that is an understatement. As a matter of fact, the sheer volume of information I believe actually works against you in some ways. I watched so many colleagues/friends bury hundreds upon hundreds of hours (and thousands of dollars) into the exam and still come out with failing grades and a feeling of being severely overwhelmed and I always just scratched my head. I was one of the few who chose a different option, and while I did take the full 18 month window to get the exam done, that was 100% my own fault.

    FAR – 60 hrs

    BEC – 16-18 hrs

    AUD – 10 hrs

    REG – 50-60 hrs

So let's say about a max of 150 hours to pass all 4 parts (REG was the only one I took more than once – 3 times – and most of the study hours I listed came on the third attempt). I am seriously just a “Normal_Person” – not the top of my class, didn't go to a top school, hated homework/studying in college, wanted a social life and chose that over studying at times, etc. etc.

I used a single set of study materials – MDS by Steve Martin. I'm not going to sit here and be a fanboy and come off as someone who was hired to market MDS, but I will say that it is obvious that Steve focused on quality of materials and not quantity. Books are smaller, videos shorter, there are still thousands of HW/practice questions/practice exams/SIMS but it all focuses in on heavily tested and more complex topics, while going over less tested and simpler areas in much less detail – just enough to give you what you need in case a question does happen to come up. The only reason I failed REG twice was because I found the material to be a snore-fest and could barely stay awake – I just don't like tax and law at all (and I still got a “perfect score” on it – 75).

TLDR: Becker is a comprehensive program that will give you everything you need to pass (and more), but I believe its volume of material isn't a pro, it is a con. There are several more affordable options out there that will get you the same 3 letters, saving you both time and money.

Regardless of the course you choose – please realize that the QUALITY of your study time is far more important than QUANTITY no matter the materials in front of you (focused, no distractions, determined, not studying while hungry or extremely tired, trying to understand the concepts/logic and not doing rote memorization to the extent you can avoid it, applying common sense (except REG since tax law DEFIES ALL COMMON SENSE EVAR), etc.)

    FAR: 1/12/13 ... 82
    REG: 8/30/14 ... 75
    AUD: August 2013 ... 89
    BEC: July 2013 ... 84

While I don't know anything about it, a friend of mine switched from Becker to Roger and absolutely loves it.

@Normal_Person, while im not doubting you, but just wondering, how did you managed to fit in let it be even smaller books, shorter lectures and “thousands” of MCQs/Sims in 10 hours of AUD study? While i can totally swallow 50-60 hours for FAR/REG, 10 hours for Audit, what was it? 2 hours for 5 days?

katerina2665, he did mention that it took him 18 months to complete all 4 parts,so the 10 hrs was for a retake.

I have used Becker along with Ninja and I am a big Becker fan, but it really comes down to how much time you spend studying for the exams. I think the advantage with Becker is that it highlights the important things, and makes sure you have a strong foundation going into the exam.

At my undergrad, becker was obviously a partner with them of some sorts. they offered a fast pass course there so it was the only review course my school advertised. Therefore, I bought it. Everybody here uses becker because it's the only thing we ever hear about. I felt like I was very prepared for my first two exams (aud and bec). Reg I felt like it taught me the right things, just the sims were absolutely nutts on my exam today so we'll see. But back to becker, it is definitely a good review course. However even at half off you're looking at dropping around 2 grand which sucks. I almost choked when I paid for becker this summer. However I can't complain as I've been successful with it so far. I feel like their MCQ's are top notch and I've only come across 3 questions I can remember in 3 exams I had never heard anything about before. The bottom line is becker works, but I'm sure the other review courses will too. Ultimately this exam falls on you.

    BEC - 76 7/22/14
    AUD - 84 8/30/14
    REG - 75 10/16/14
    FAR - 87 11/24/14

@BarceFan, his words were: let's say about max of 150 hours to pass ALL tests. Which adds up to (per his statement) Far 60 + Reg 60 + Bec Apprx 18, which indeed leaves 12 hours for Aud. He also stated he re-took only Reg. That's why I was wondering, its not the sufficiency of 10 hours that i question, but how can you read/watch/do MCQs in those hours. Of course, if there are 5 videos total 10 mn each, and the book is 35 pages long, then, yes.

as to why it took him 18 months, Idk, but he passed and it all that matters.
