Hello all so i started stuyding for the CPA around this time last year. So far I’ve token BEC twice (74,70) & audit once (67). So I’ve yet to pass an exam over a year and I’ve decided to switch to BECKER. For anyone who switched to BECKER was there an immediate difference in results?

There's no magic review course that will bump your score, any of them will get the job done. It's all about how much time and brainpower you devote to studying the material.

First…your scores aren't that far off. That means you can do it.

I didn't switch, or try any other prep…I only used Becker…but I found it to be excellent. Do the questions. Go back and drill a few from prior weeks as part of your review. Do the sims. Take notes. Focus on what they tell you to focus on.

However much effort you're putting in, add 10% more. Review a little harder. Do more past questions.

I wrote flash cards and drilled those too.

I used Becker and hated it. It isn't my learning style. Jeff will tell you to find a review course that works with your learning style so I took a little time to figure out what that was and starting passing exams when I actually studied. I am using Rogers and have supplemented with Ninja stuff. Good luck.

I used Wiley and Ninja and got a 74 on BEC then a 72 and 73 on REG over 18 months. Switched to Becker and Ninja and passed four in a row.

That's because Sheri learns differently. Everyone learns different ways. I've used Wiley and Ninja as supplement and have went 3/3. All review courses have the info for you to pass. It's just finding the one that you learn the best with.

Are the exam preps really that different in style?

I worked VERY hard on the prep…and I put in more hours than I often see recommended here (at least for FAR and parts of REG). That's what I needed to do based on my strengths/weaknesses and difficulty with rote memorization. Some people may have been great with 10 hours of prep/week…other than Audit, and certain sections of REG and BEC, I wasn't one of them. There were weeks (early FAR) when I put in 50-60 hours. And I still ended up feeling under prepared after the test (which hit every area I skimped on). It's also very possible that I overdid it and spent a lot of that time in a haze. Still…if I did it again, I'd do the same thing.

I'll say this…the people that I saw regularly in my Becker class prep passed. The ones who came in every week…and who took notes…passed. The one guy who didn't pass was a lawyer who I suspect didn't have the time to put in the prep outside of the class.

I was also more desperate than many here…I didn't have an accounting degree. I had NOTHING to justify myself as an accountant without passing the exams, so failure simply wasn't an option.

I realize that and I'm informing him that everyone learns differently and some review courses work better than others for different people. You and I are good proof. I wasn't bashing you lol

Aaron – I agree, I put in a lot more hours than I see on here. I don't think the review courses vary that much in style but some people need really engaging instructors through video (Rogers) and some need good instructors and shorter lessons (Wiley). They all teach the same material basically, I think it's just how well they can engage you/how well the review course is written.

    @Sheri

The exact same thing would have likely happened if you started with Becker and switched to Wiley. Unless you went from 72s and 73s to 95s, etc. your logic isn't really that scientific as it fails to account for how much you actually DID learn from Wiley that made Becker that much easier to grasp.

BTW, I used neither of those so there ya go!

    Good luck to all

Bourne – The Becker prep with instructors I liked more were a lot easier now that you mention it. A few were like pulling teeth. BEC was BRUTAL for me.

I'll always take live class over video…watching a video my mind wanders…there are too many things to do, and click. The directors cut of season 3 Community came out?!? HEY-O! OMG…I need to hear that obscure cover of that one Kinks song and I need to hear it NOW! Who did the backup vocal on that? Let me check…

I've heard stories from Colleagues saying they switched to Becker and was 4 for 4 after that. Said the learning is more detailed and efficient so it's not as dragged as other reviews. Hopefully that'll change my results.

@sheri what was the biggest difference when you switched? I'm switching from Roger to Becker.

I agree that the materials make a difference. Plenty of people use Wiley, but it did not give me success. After 2 years I decided to switch up my study methods and used the Ninja test bank to learn the materials and finally found success. So for me, something like Surgent might have been a better investment in materials. Using a system that works with your learning style makes a huge difference.

Wiley's software and texts were riddled with errors in my college courses. Awful. I never would have used Wiley. They seem like they hire freshmen in college to write questions.
