Best Review for BEC

The clock is ticking and I’m getting a little nervous. I take AUD in two weeks and plan to take BEC the first week of December. That gives me roughly eight weeks to prepare. I feel that a lot of the topics in BEC I haven’t been exposed to so I need something that will give me a great foundation of understanding. Should I just do Ninja notes/MCQ? Another review course? I don’t have any materials for BEC currently so looking for suggestions. I heard/read that Becker BEC doesn’t do a very good job preparing you. Any info would be great.

    Thank you.

I think other people's experience should be a baseline for exam toughness but not a guideline.

It depends on how you learn best/what ways you can learn:
    1. Auditory – Program with Audio Review is best (also how much time do you have? If you have a lot of commuting, you probably want this so you are at least doing something.
    2. Reading- Is it better if it is simple or ¬do you want all the detail you can get?
    3. MCQ- all of them have comparable MCQ’s but I would say if I considered it in order of easiest to most tedious: Roger, Ninja, Wiley (I only tried the tax book (barely..I halfway read Individual tax)- but there is enough info overload..ugh I didn't like it.

Of course there are also people that learn by writing but that's a bit time-consuming….I can give you my experiences on BEC review courses involving Ninja and Roger but I'm only halfway through so IDK how good it would be.

Disclaimer: That being said a review course is only as good as the person who uses it to maximize the benefit, the way YOU utilize it /what you make of it is what will help determine how much you can get out of it. I wish we could just get this stuff into our head by osmosis, but no dice.

I definitely am more of a reader/doer/visual learner. My ADD is too bad to listen to audio lectures lol. Note taking seems to help a bit, but I think that helps mostly with short-term memory. Reading seems to help things stick a little longer. MCQ just helps refine.

    Does that help?

@Broag I failed my first BEC exam because I focused to much in memorizing the formulas but got a conceptual exam and failed. The second time around I read the book 2/3 times and it really helped to solidify the concepts. So I think the best advice I can give you is to read the book as much as you can. The last two days prior to my exam, I didn't do any MCQ just read the book and it helped me on exam day.

What book did you study with? I'm thinking about Wiley, but not sure. I don't like Roger's textbooks. They're too jumbled and not laid out very well.

I used Rogers and 2014 Beckers book. I think Beckers goes into a little more detail than Rogers and it help me a lot in topics lightly covered by Rogers.

Okay, great. Did you read a section then do MCQ? Or did you just read straight through?

I honestly don't think you need to purchase a review course for BEC, at least not the more popular choices. If I were you, I would purchase Ninja MCQ to strengthen your knowledge on BEC topics. Nothing is really hard to grasp in BEC. There are many reasons I would not purchase a review program for BEC, but I won’t elaborate. If you’ve already taken FAR, then you are halfway there. If it’s been a while since school, I would go with Ninja ten point combo. The MCQ will help you identify your weak topics and then you can use items in 10 point combo to nail the topics without the unnecessary expense.

Please do elaborate, it is the whole reason I'm asking. I have passed REG and FAR (with REG expiring on 1/31/17). I want to pass BEC the first try.

I would recommend Ninja book and MCQ for you then but JIC here is my experience:

    Roger CPA review (7 chapters)
    Pros:
    • He keeps it simple and tries to keep you engaged and accountable (it is a dry subject)
    • The questions are easier and less frustrating than other review courses
    Cons:
    • You better have it mastered meaning almost everything +he touches needs to be pounded into your head/ pretty much cuts out a lot of the FAT (majority of miniscule details, while Wiley goes too far in the opposite direction)
    • Some sections/parts he just reads from the book and sometimes he talks a little too fast
    • Few questions are double- counted

    Ninja (9 chapters) Book/MCQ

    Pros:
    • You can divide by each subsection so you don’t have to read the whole damn section before completing a quiz section
    • You can reset your data so you can go through everything again without seeing multiple questions
    • The book is much simpler and even easier to understand than Rogers

    Cons:
    • Few questions are double- counted
    • If you don’t have the book- The MCQ can sometimes be frustrating

This is really helpful, thanks. I think I'm going to go with the BEC Ninja book/MCQ. Just makes the most sense and I already know what a good product the MCQ are. Is the Ninja book just as enormous as AUD and FAR? I'm guessing it isn't.

    Thanks again.

I passed all 4 parts with Becker and supplemented 2 sections with Ninja MCQ's. Since I passed I'm going to obviously be pro Becker, but I'm sure folks who passed with other reviews feel the same way. The important thing to remember about BEC is that COSO and IT are not as much memorization as you might think while you are studying for it. The MCQ's on those sections require you to truly understand the concepts. I thought before I took BEC that I would likely score in the 90's and ended up with an 81.
