Best way to break into big 4 advisory?

I currently work as an audit intern in a mid sized public accounting firm. I want to work in Transaction Services in a big 4 firm.

Is it better to apply directly for advisory jobs? Or do I have a better shot at applying for an audit position to get my foot in the door and trying to make the switch after a year or so. Keep in mind I didn’t have a kicka$$ GPA in undergrad and I haven’t passed my CPA yet (hopefully will have it done by the time I apply to big 4).

It depends on the firm, but generally speaking A LOT of TS people are laterals from audit in the Big 4 (KPMG and PwC I can confirm in my locality that more than 90% of the people were internal transfers or rotations who stuck around and went permanent).

It's MUCH easier to get in for audit than TS. You being an intern from a tiny firm – you better just apply for audit only right off the bat and try to transfer laterally.
