Best Way to Get to 33 Accounting Credit Hours for New York State CPA Exam

    Hello,

Between a Bachelor’s in Finance and an MBA in general mgmt I will have no problem reaching the 150 required credit hours and the 36 general business hours. However, I will need to do some back tracking to reach the 33 accounting hours needed for licensure. Throughout my studies I have taken ACC 101 (4), ACC 102 (3), Cost Accounting (3), Valuation of Private Equity Firms (3, accounting elective), and Integrated Advanced Financial & Accounting Analysis (3, MBA course, accounting elective)–for a total of 16/33 accounting credits.

Please correct me on any of the following as I have not been able to find concrete answers on some of this.

In order to sit for the exam in New York one must have taken one course in Financial Accounting & Reporting, Taxation, Cost/Managerial, and Auditing and Attestation Services. Cost will obviously cover the Cost requirement and I am being told by NASBA that ACC 101/102 meet the Financial Accounting & Reporting requirement. Is this correct, leaving me in need of Taxation and (External?) Auditing before becoming eligible to sit? And Tax can be taken at a community college while Auditing must be upper level? Can the rest of the accounting electives be from a community college? What other courses would you suggest?

I like the idea of doing as much of this online as I can. Having said that, does New York State accept courses taken through UNA PAPP? If so that seems like a no brainer. Are there other online institutions that are definitely accepted by New York State? I am interested to know if anyone has been in a similar position and if so, which courses you took and from which institutions.

Basically, I want to be sure that the courses I pay for/take will be accepted by NYS before I enroll in them. Thank you!

I was in a similar situation as you, having an undergrad in Finance and I went back in Fall 2014 to a CUNY school. I had only taken 2 accounting courses for my undergrad, so I had a lot more to take, but I would suggest doing a Government/NFP course. My FAR exam was heavy in that topic and having taken that class during my last semester was a huge help. I'd be careful with online classes. I took two of them my last semester and even though it was nice not having to actually go to class, they were a ton of work and I really don't feel like I learned much from them. If you have any questions regarding which classes will be accepted, this is the guy you want to speak to, Tomu Itoh <titoh@nasba.org>.

I'm also in New York but I went to college in California. Even after moving here, I took one course online at a California community college. NASBA accepted all my accounting courses, including an online Quickbooks course (because “accounting” was in the title of course).

Might want to check out Foothill College. They have a lot of online classes for cheap. If you only take one course, you don't have to pay out of state tuition.

Thanks for the feedback! Does it seem like they are pretty lenient with what they will accept as long as it's from an accredited institution?

Does anyone have experience with online classes from LSU? Are they recognized by New York State?

Not sure if you read this on the UNA PAPP website, but the NY board does not count those courses towards your accounting hours.

“*The state of New York recently indicated that these courses can be counted toward the business hours needed to sit for the exam in New York, but not the accounting hours”

Please can you tell me where did you end up taking classes? I am exactly in your situation.

Get the state board to assess your transcripts. That way, you'll know for sure whether or not certain courses you've already taken will count towards the accounting hours you need.

As far as how to go about getting the other hours, as long as it is an accounting course and the college is accredited, it will work.

Could you shed some light on how do I count my accounting and business credits? I have a Bachelor in Business Administration concentration in accounting. From my transcript, I could calculate 19 upper level and 6 lower level accounting credits. I have 24 upper level business credits and not sure how many lower level business credits. How many accounting and business credits do I need for NY License? Is it 33 and 36 upper Level Credits in accounting and business respectively or total upper and lower credits combined?

With Bachelor and 120 credits, I am eligible to sit for NY exam. Where can get my transcript evaluated for licensing only to find how many credits in each department I need?
