UWorld Roger CPA Review Question –

Yes it’s another REG study method post lol. I’m trying to come up with a solid plan to make the most out of the next 7 weeks. The amount of detail is pretty overwhelming at first and it seems like I need to know everything! I feel if I take notes I’ll be writing out the entire book and it will take too long. I was thinking of just writing out the Ninja Notes once or twice if I have enough time and making flashcards on Brainscape for mcq’s.

I’ve already gotten some good advice from a couple members, but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions how to use them together.

I'm currently studying for Reg with Rogers as well. Last night I finished the videos so today I'm gonna start with Mcq for Indv. tax. I agree with you there is so much material and detail to learn. I'm taking the advice some people have posted here in the forum to know tax inside out, ethics and Security Act 1933 and 1934. For B-law just review the text.

Roger's questions are great for MCQ of the test since they are very similar (80% of the MCQ portion of the test has questions on stuff he emphasized in the lectures) but not comparable almost at all for the SIMS FYI (the book is ok though). Ninja is a bit better since it involves more complicated calculations with both MCQ and SIMs.

I budgeted 3 days for Individual taxation and ended up spending 2.5 weeks on it to remember everything (well with a lot of breaks in between so technically 1 week as that chapter is the most heavy out of all of them). Also Partnerships and S corps flow through Individual so sometimes questions (in both test banks) will reference chapters you haven't even read yet so you might want to wait to start Q's…

    1. I would say the MOST important chapters are the first 4- Individual Tax, C Corp & S corp, Partnerships so those are the chapters you want to crack down on the most followed by Property Transactions.

    3. Glance through and read BUS law maybe once and do MCQ, don't bother spending too much time on it. If you don't have time for it just do the MCQ.

    3. Don't concentrate on memorizing numbers such as phase-outs/deductions (unless they deal with AGI or ATI etc) just know the gist/ballpark of them.

7 weeks is enough time for REG if you budget your time correctly so I would suggest breaking it down for:
    4* weeks for 1st 4 chapters (i.e a chapter a week)
2* weeks for 2nd important chapters (all other tax)
1* Week for Bus Law and Ethics.

    Thanks for the tips!

@Christina Baughman- I like doing Roger's questions during my initial run through the material. He doesn't have as many of the ones that make you want to pull your hair out like Ninja does lol. I plan on doing sort of a modified Ninja method similar to what I did for FAR since there's a lot more material than AUD or BEC. I'd like to leave myself at least 2 weeks for review where I'm doing mostly mcq's and sims.

Did you write out your own notes or just read and do tons of questions?

I did but writing is a waste of time for me, I type faster anyway. I found my flashcards more useful; problem with note-taking is sometimes I do tend to write half the book too so I'd say actually if you do take notes try and make them scarce…

I passed REG on my first try in 7 weeks using my version of the NINJA method:

    1) Read the book/watch videos and take notes. Your notes don't have to be too detailed, but make sure you are understanding and not just passively listening/reading.
    2) Answer all of the NINJA questions. Go subsection by subsection until you have seen all of the questions. I combine some of the tiny subsections Take notes on harder topics and try to understand why your answer was wrong. Don't worry if your average/trending is about 40-60 percent. You are learning by doing with each single MCQ. Also, write about 10pages of NINJA notes every night. You could also rewrite your notes you took on step 1.
    3) Take a few days to rewrite all NINJA notess and make flashcards of the concepts (or write down the NINJA flashcards). Write them down though it really helps retain the information rather than just using the app. I wrote mine down, but ended up using the app because my handwriting is terrible, but just writing them down helps. As Christina mentioned, don't worry too much about the numbers. Do not do any MCQs during these few days. Your hands will hurt, but it's worth it.
    3) Go through all NINJA MCQs missed in step 2. I went subsection by subsection selecting “missed last time seen”, combining tiny sections if needed. Continue to write down 10 pages of notes every day. You should have your flashcards so go through a section every day. During this step try to spend an equalish amount of time on MCQs and flashcards/notes. Example: I would do MCQs for 1.5hrs and go through one section of flashcards and 10pages of NINJA notes. You are focusing here on learning, memorizing, and understanding the concepts so explain them in your own words to your dog, your cat, your fish, your plant, whoever will listen. You should know the flashcards forwards and backwards. The first time you go through the flashcards will take so long because you don't know the concepts, but it will get better.
    4) Go through all NINJA MCQs that you still haven't answered correctly subsection by subsection. Your missed MCQs should be smaller now, so try to alternate between “missed last time seen” and “random”. Continue flashcards and NINJA notes.
    5) You should about a 5 days out to your exam and just focus on random MCQs and create a “cheat sheet” of concepts you are struggling with. My “cheat sheet” was usually just going through NINJA notes and writing down everything I still didn't know. Continue to practice your all your flashcards and read your “cheat sheet” every day. Your “cheat sheet” should be no more than 5 pages front and back. You will probably have some MCQs memorized and that's okay as long as you know why the answer is the answer and not just that it's the answer.
    6) On the day before the exam read your full NINJA notes and go through every single flashcard. The flashcards shouldn't take very long because you know them so well by now it should take you less than an hour
    7) On the day of exam, depending on what time your exam is at, reread your cheat sheet and go through every flashcard again.
    8) Pass!

That was my process! I didn't realize how detailed my post was, but I used this for both REG and BEC and passed on the next try. (REG was my first attempt and BEC had failed twice previously 7 months prior).

Thank you vannessa_ls! I'll be sure to incorporate some of that into my plan. I like the idea of writing out the Ninja flashcards, but I feel guilty just writing out notes and not pounding as many mcq's as possible. Guess it's whatever works for you and it seems to be working in your case.

Did you do any mcq's while reading and taking notes for step 1?
