Big 4 office transfer

So I am slated to begin my career at PwC this upcoming fall in Detroit. I would consider Detroit to be a larger market, however, pretty much my entire family lives in Chicago making me the only one in Detroit. I dont mind living here for a year or two since I went to school here, however eventually I want to make the move to be with my family, but also want to stay with PwC. Does anyone have any experience, recommendations, or advice on how I might go about getting an office transfer to Chicago within a year or two? Is it even possible or likely?

Hi @TaxShark, congrats on the job offer, PwC is an awesome company. I do NOT work for the Big 4, but I graduated from a target school and the vast majority of my friends/colleagues do. From everything I have heard, your office will probably be somewhat willing to help you relocate to Chicago assuming they have a similar practice group and need. Honestly, though your experience will be pretty portable between any of the Big 4, so I don't see any reason you couldn't transfer to one of them- especially with a CPA license and 1-2 years of experience under your belt.

Hi @taxshark – I personally know your office and can say this market has had huge swings up and down. I would say integrate 100% into the team you've been hired for and after a year or two once you're completely comfortable with your Manager/Senior Manager/Partner then I would have that conversation with your leadership team. Basically feel them out first, listen for the feedback on others who have looked for a transfer. Sometimes you get a really supportive team and sometimes you don't so I'm just saying play it smart and safe.

    Congrats and good luck!
