CA – Educational requirements for 2017

Quick question guys. So I graduated from college in Southern California in May 2014 in business admin with acct and finance concentrations which provided me with all the educational requirements for the exam.

I took a break from the CPA and never completed it because I was an idiot but now I’m back I want to complete it ASAP. I can pass 1 or 2 exam this year but not all 4 before 2017 starts.

Looking online and found this https://www.dca.ca.gov/cba/applicants/tip_sheet2017.pdf. Says on Jan 1, 2017 the requirements call for ‘Minimum 3 semester or 4 quarter units in accounting ethics or accountants’ professional responsibilities’. Would I have to go back to school to complete this 1 class? How does this work if I have passed 1 or 2 parts by the end of the year and suddenly I don’t meet the education requirements when the new year starts.

    Thanks for reading this guys!

I recently came across this and found a line on the site somewhere that basically said, your application for license has to be in their hands by 12/31/16 or you have to take that additional class (if you haven't already). I graduated in 2010 so pretty much all of the ethics units are a stretch for me. Trying to see how I can make other business classes count as ethics. I definitely never took a specific “accounting ethics” class so I'll have to find that online somewhere. Just try to get your tests finished asap before the new 2017 tests kick in. Then figure out your units later.

The requirements that you linked are for your license but are not the requirements to sit for the CPA exam. Think of it similarly to the 150 semester units that's required for licensing but is not required to sit for the exam. In other words, you should still be able to take the exam in 2017 without the ethics requirement. The new exam begins in April 2017 so if you're comfortable with the current exams, try to get them done before then. You'll still need to take ethics in order to get your license.

Just FYI, Santa Monica college offers an accounting ethic class online. I took the class online this year to fulfill the 150 semester units. It was fairly easily.

I was in a similar situation. They started teaching that ethics class at Fresno state the semester after I graduated….But yes, essentially, the CBA needs to have your license application and all outstanding documents by 12/31/16. If they don't, you WILL have to take that ethics class. You can still sit for the exams and pass them all, but you'll have to take the class before applying for your license.

Just pass the exams ASAP, as you have the 18 month window for that. Keep that momentum going. Your tests wont expire after that, so knock those out, and then take that class.

    To CALCPA,

Hi, you mentioned that you took the Accounting Ethics online at Santa Monica College. I couldn't find it. Can you please help? Thank you.

So I've passed 3 exams, ethics exam, and have the work experience for licensure. Just waiting on last exam score (BEC December 8th)before I submit my application. I know I'll need to do the lifescan/background check for licensure as well but does anyone know if I can do the lifescan thing before my last exam score comes out? I'm trying to beat the Jan 1 education requirements change so trying to have as much as possible ready to go by December 8th.
