So…I just realized that I need to take a class specifically titled “Accounting ethics” in order to be licensed in CA. I probably should have read the requirements earlier, but I’ve been more focused on the exams. Anyone in CA have experience with any of the online courses. The UCLA one seems to be the only available (at a steep price of $735), does anyone know if that class is difficult and time consuming or kind of BS. I work Full-time, so I want an easier, Jeff Winger blow-off class.

I haven't looked into this either myself, so I probably should read up on it. Have you already double checked with the state board that you need to take this course? Also does it need to be from a UC? Can a community college class or some other online course work too? I'd think a UC course would require more effort.

The CalCPA site, they said “Starting on Jan. 1, 2017, and applicant will be required to take a standalone 3-semester or 4-quarter unit course devoted solely to accounting ethics or accountants’ professional responsibilities as part of the 10 unit ethics requirement.”

Community colleges offer this class too, they were all full though. UCLA seemed to be the most expensive, but also the only one available.

Look at the online classes at foothill college. Many other students meet their requirements there. I took the class and in our introductory statements almost everyone said that the only reason they were taking the class was to meet California's ethic requirement.

Weird I received the same letter from the CBA too. Just take it at a local community college….all you need to do is get a D or a C and to pass lol

    Hello,
I completed the UCLA ethics class last year. If you sign up 30 days prior to the start they do give a 10% discount on the price. Definitely not a BS class does require time and effort. I was moving to California so community college wasn't an option as I would have had out of state tuition. I believe you can take it for credit only or for a grade but credit only requires 80% to pass but grade was 70% to pass…if my memory is correct!

I've been in the fog of the CPA exams for so long that this new requirement definitely slipped past me. Thanks for making this topic. I guess I should start looking at classes for the fall semester. Seems like this won't be as easy as I expect.

I moved to CA from NM a number of years ago and finally got around to realizing I too would be needing to take an Accounting Ethics class. I took it at Foothill Community College, was around $200 if memory serves and while it was not a super intensive class it did require some effort. I took it during busy season and passed with an A if that's of any help. Just set calendar reminders for when assignments are due (probably the day or two before so you don't accidentally miss it!) and you'll be totally fine. I called and confirmed with CBA that taking it a community college would be fine so I didn't have to pay a university level tuition rate.

You can take it either at foothill college or SMC. Being it's community college passing grade is C. Please remember no cheating while taking the class by googling question on the test.

Currently taking the class at SMC.
I already passed the ethics exam, why do I still need to take a class?? doesn't make sense…

@Ds34168 so you know that if you do unethical stuff you will know that you get caught. Seriously the class is stupid and i totally agree with you there is really no point in taking it.
