How do you stay motivated? And how do you pick yourself up and move forward?

And specifically, what is your amended study strategy? Anything less than a 75 is a 0, but you can’t possibly repeat the same schedule, can you?

BTW – the title to this thread is meant to be absolute, positive reinforcement – like “The Biggest Loser”.

    Fall 7 times – get up 8 🙂

    Thanks!

I've personally never failed. I just found a bunch of ways not to pass the exam. Luckily, I found 4 that worked. Staying motivated was never a problem for me. I always wanted to study. I always wanted to get up and get it done, but other things got in the way (understatement of the year!). I've always believed in God and I always knew He had a plan for me. Some of us were put on earth to fight and to struggle. I believe that the fight doesn't make you tougher; it makes you more compassionate than you were before.

I still have the picture of bnrhilton's fortune cookie fortune as the background on one of my computers. I almost freaked out when I realized that I had fallen down 7 times and stood up on the 8th time with REG and then finally with FAR. So I figured out what it meant to STAND!

    Study constantly

Take your anger out on the exam

Accept that you won't know everything

    Never Quit!

    Determination is the key

I tried studying the same way for FAR that I studied for AUD. That didn't work! Each test is different and you have to approach them differently. For me, BEC was all about memorizing formulas and “drawing pictures” of how things were organized. I used Word's Organizational Chart to draw my pictures. I think it was the process of making them that made the information really stick. AUD was learning the standard audit report to the point that I could sing it! FAR was just repetition, repetition and more repetition. I had to draw some pictures there too. REG was listening to Jeff's audio over and over and over. I used his audio on BEC, FAR and REG and for me it helped the most on REG. That was my nightmare child! I almost answered one question wrong, but then I heard Jeff's voice in my head telling me what to do! When I walked out of that exam I had to send him a text to thank him. I couldn't tell him why I was thanking him, but I wanted him to know that his little memory tricks saved my behind!

To answer your original question of how do you pick yourself up and move forward, getting really, really, really angry helps! Focus that anger and take back your lunch money! Sometimes you have to STAND up to the bully to get what is yours!

Like Kricket said, you only fail when you give up.

I have sat for exams 15 times now over the past 2 years. I came into this exam thinking I was going to be one of those people who passed all 4 the first time and be done in 6 months. That was far from reality. But I wouldn't have it any other way. I have built thick skin over the past two years and my drive to get this exam done is as big as it has ever been.

I sat for FAR back in November. If I passed, I would be done with the entire CPA. If I failed, I would lose by BEC credit. I failed FAR with a 74! It was the worst feeling I ever experienced. I took December off to regroup and get re-energized. I came back and passed FAR in February with an 80. Now I take BEC next week for hopefully my final CPA exam ever.

Everyone goes through different paths, but in the end, our CPA's all mean the same thing. The sooner you start viewing not passing exams as failures, the easier this journey becomes. I always look at the bright side. I have never ever gotten a worse score on a CPA exam. I have always improved. Keep at it and you will get there!

    BEC - 77 (lost credit), 4/5/13
    AUD - 83
    REG - 77
    FAR - 73, 74, 80! One more to go!!

It took me 13 times to finally conquer the exam. This time. The first being in November 2010 and the last one in January of this year. The best I can remember, I took the exam maybe six times under the old pencil and paper format. I actually still have my old test scores from 1991, 1992 and 1994. I also took the exam in 1988.

Kricket, an awesome message! There are no failures as if you fail, you fail to try.

    Good Luck!

The best advice I can give came from someone on this site (that I can't remember): Think about all of the time and money you have spent preparing for and taking this exam – you will never be able to get either back so make it worthwhile! That saying really helped me buckle down for my last 2 tests. Good luck!

    AUD - 51, 80
    REG - 84
    FAR - 15, 29, 55, 80
    BEC - 65, 72, 69, 76 (expired), 83

Wow – great advice everyone! And you guys are right, a CPA is a CPA is a CPA…

I think I am starting to enjoy the journey, not just seeking the destination!

This is just what I needed today.

Lately, I have been in such a studying rut. I'm just burned out and dissappointed with myself.

The friends I started this journey with are done now and I have two left.

I have been studying since October 2011 and just.want.to.be.done.

I know how badly I want it but am having such a hard time translating that to efforts. It seems like lately I can't wake up in the morning to study like I used to and can't focus at night.

I've been staying away from these boards because I feel so bad about my studying.

Thank you guys for reminding me why I am in this and that there are other people in this boat. I am a strong believer in keeping your scores and number of times you took each exam in your signature to show that it does, eventually work out for everyone!

    B 71 - 79 EXPIRED
    A 69 - 75 EXPIRED
    R 65 - 48 - 45
    F 56 - 61 - 65 - 64

Still need 30 more credits, in basket weaving (gotta love new CA requirements)

@LSNYC – I love your story! You are inducted to my heroes book…. You are included in my hall of famer's (spelling???) with:

CPA Peanut / CPA Jomarie / CPA keeptrying / CPA Kricket / CPA cosmo_sippin_cpa / supervisor / tootsie.

(I know I am missing a few here)

I completely agree with CPA Kricket, I am also a firm believer in God and I believe he works through mysterious paths. My multiple fails were with BEC; my nemesis! My first fail was, I would say, a deserved one. Long story short, I went in the exam understanding very little the variances, but fortunately enough I could solve them and get them right. My big issue, which was no secret, was/is Information Technology. I know NOTHING about computers. NOTHING!!! Economy, cost accounting and managerial accounting were mastered… But IT was my weakest area. I still went to the test because my NTS was about to expire, came out with a 62 my lowest “fail” grade. What was my ONLY weaker topic? IT what what were my written communication based on? … Weaker in IT and weaker in written communication.

So what does logic dictates? Your next attempt, logically, try to focus on your weaker areas and review the ones you already no. Not my logic!!!!!! I decided to, not master, expert all the topics except IT. My brilliant logic said to be an expert in ALL other topics to compensate for IT. Failed 2 times more!!!! 70 and 72 were my two following grade. And of course my only weaker topic in both tests… IT.

For my last attempt I ONLY studied for IT and a little more written communication (being that English is my second language), finally I got a 79!!!! In my mind my highest score!!!!

    B - 62, 70, 72, 79!!!
    A - 68, 81
    R - 70, 82
    F - 84
