CPA Exam Work Experience Requirement

I’m curious if after passing the CPA exam, is there a time constraint on fulfilling the one year of full time — or 2,000 hours of part time — qualifying work experience that many states require?

I plan to complete the CPA exam this year and then begin working full time in January of 2018. Is it common to fulfill the work experience requirement AFTER passing the CPA exam?

Thank you so much for any input you can provide!

Thank you! I wonder if most states are like that – do you know where I could go to confirm that for my state (North Dakota)?

Pretty sure this is by state law…

I was very confused about this in PA…and initially thought you only have 5 years to complete work experience…

Once you pass the exam, they count in PA. Period. When you meet experience/ed, you apply.

I am also doing experience after exams.

    AUD - 96
    BEC - 84
    FAR - 89
    REG - 86
    Aaron and always remember, YMMV

I profit from your CPE frustration. You're welcome.

I am in TX and have CPA family members in several different states. In my family, it's a 50/50 split: some did the work experience before/while testing, and some did it after.

I believe all states have some work experience requirements– but specific requirements vary by state (e.g. what roles/responsibilities are considered “qualifying” work experience (i.e. what type of role, etc.), length of time required in a qualifying role, etc.)

I'm in Texas. Sitting for last exam in 1 week. I was an internal auditor with a CPA supervisor in Aug 2009 – Oct 2010. I recently contacted my TX state CPA board and asked if my work experience would still meet the requirement, considering how old it was. (Another concern: that supervising CPA has since left the company, even though I can still get in touch with him.)

They haven't responded back… But, if that old work experience is no good, I'll review my more recent work experience against the list of qualifying roles– if nothing fits, I already have another job lined up where I could start the qualifying experience as soon as I finish my last exam.

GOOD LUCK! And let me know what the outcome is!
