Is anyone here familiar with the application for licensure in Tennessee? Just spoke with a cpa friend from NC and she said the application process was a nightmare– 3 required letters of recommendation, notarized experience waiver, 10 page application… Is this what I should expect in TN?

I just received my passing score on the 8th, so I don't know a whole lot more than you. However, I did go ahead right after I passed and sent an email in to the TN State Board of Accountancy. When they responded they told me to go ahead and take the ethics exam and he sent me the work experience form to go ahead and fill out. He said it usually takes NASBA about 8 weeks to get the scores to the board. He said if I'd go ahead and send back in my ethics exam certificate and my work experience form then when they received my scores it should be a fairly quick process. So I didn't get the feeling that it would be that difficult and they were very helpful. Congratulations on passing!!

I've also heard it is pretty simple in TN. A coworker talked to someone as well while waiting for this last score release and she told him to finish ethics and call her back if he passed. She said the process is easy and the worst part is just the waiting around like JBeaty0507 said. Congratulations!

I too think it's a fairly easy process.

It is pretty easy actually. Have your official transcripts sent to the board by your school(s). You don't need letters of recommendation, only a form signed by an active licensed CPA that has knowledge of you being employed in the accounting field for more than a year. Pass the ethics test, then email the certificate to the state board.

This is how it was for me, but recently they have made some changes with the education requirements, I am not sure how it works today. When I started the process I was one that was an “in-betweener” when the new rules weren't exactly clear.

Also, it is helpful to call them, they can help you out and send you some materials before they would get notified of NASBA's scores, which is when they would email them to you automatically.

They also moved really fast for me, after I had all of my stuff submitted to them, I paid my application fee one morning. At lunch that day, I got an email on my phone and I was licensed.

What Mitch said. It's nothing like NC. As far as the education requirements – you need 150 hours for the license but only 120 hours + a degree + certain minimum business/accounting credits to actually sit.

As far as getting the actual license – Unless something has changed since last year, they don't license until the end of the quarter and have all their data from NASBA. So, the earlier in the testing period you take your test, the longer you have to wait to get licensed. I took my last section on 5/14 and was licensed on 7/05 – almost 2 months of waiting.

Make sure you have the requisite accounting and business classes. They will tell you if you are lacking. Once done, you get a confirmation of eligibility. After exams, emailed my Ethics and experience on 6th of the month, waited 5 weeks for my license number to be issued. Not too bad a wait. It's great I could email it. TN was very helpful in the process. Last exam passed to license was 8 weeks.

Did you have to wait for the “packet” to come in the mail to provide instructions to apply further? I've read somewhere about applying for the license online. I set up a profile but it specifically asks if you've received the packet.

I've completed all of the exams, ethics (also sent via email), etc. I feel like I'm just sitting on my hands for something to come in the mail.

I already sent NASBA my transcripts and taken the ethics exam. Once my old boss's secretary comes back from vacation, I'll be sending my experience paperwork to be completed. I set up an account on TN's CORE system and finished most of the application for the license. I just need NASBA to give me the thumbs up so I can press send.

Confused on the application process…I've passed all 4 exams and I receive an email saying I “will need to go through the ACE evaluation and have your final transcripts sent in.”

So I need to request my official transcripts to be sent in/uploaded AGAIN even tho I had them sent in last year to sit for the exams?

    Thanks

Ya. They review the transcripts again. I'm not sure why. My co-worker passed and was worried why they were doing that. It isn't a big deal and didn't take real long for him. It was like a month or so before he had his license number and all that.

My state licensing coordinator had been contracted and told me after I pay online, email her back so she will pull my transcripts from exam application and upload in my license application. I don't need to request transcripts again.

    Chris-

Apparently you got some sort of e-mail from your state board. Are you also in Tennessee? I still haven't received anything.

Jay – I am in Tennessee…I passed my last exam in March/April and received the email from the state board (4/20) saying I need to go thru the ACE evaluation. I am waiting for a response

CKCPA – When you say ‘after you pay online' which fee are you referring too? Thanks in advance!
