…in public, private, government, or anywhere for an accounting-related job?

There’s more to life than just work, right?

    Come work at my place!

It's basically 9-5 except during tax season…and then it's a little later, but not very very late. I cut down my hours when it wasn't tax season in order to have more time to study, so I've been working less than 40 hour workweeks.

But it's a very small firm, and I don't know if I necessarily get paid well considering my education and experience. However, that's the trade-off I choose at the moment.

So I think it does exist 🙂

    But there's usually a trade-off 🙂

..then does a 40 hour/week job exist at all — even outside of accounting (making at least 60k)?

I've grown up always hearing about the mantra of a “9-5” job — then upon entering my first fulltime career job, I'm already starting to wonder if an actual “9-5” actually exists.

I'm not lazy — I just feel like we, Americans, spend too much of our lives obsessing over work because we have all these “wants” instead of “needs”.

I just don't want to grow old and realize that I just wasted 30 years of my life being stressed out and having devoted those 30 years to work just so I could have a huge house that I don't really need and a $100,000 car to indulge in my own vanity.

Not in public acc…coming off a 14 hr day today. It can be exhausting, but the perks are great.

It does exist in some private companies. I worked for such, 8-5 (1h lunch) but the pay was low.

I stayed there only because I needed the time after work so badly.

right now everybody (especially acct departments in private companies) is working on a skeleton crew and expecting most people to work extra to cover for the fact they are short staffed. I think when the economy is better and companies are hiring, you are more likely to get a nice 40 hour schedule.

I am not in public but work M-F, 7:30A-5:30P and at least one Saturday a month (month end) but usually I work one more Saturday because I like the quiet to catch up on the big projects like special reports. People think I am lucky not to be in public but averaging 52-55 hours a week every single week all year long isn't that great either.

If you want to work 40 hour/week, apply for a government job. If you want to work less, become a college professor.

You should come to my workplace….and you'll be surprised!!!!!

My boss says he works 80 hours a week, but half of the time he is out of the office or just making social life with pple in the office…I thinks he makes like 150k…

My other boss gets here at around 10 and leaves at around 3…half of the time he is on the phone..he makes like 200k..

    so yes..those jobs exist..(private acg)

I think most of those 40 hr/week jobs are in companies (private/public) but not if you are looking to go into public acctg. I work for a private company and for the most part, I work 40hrs or some weeks less. I may work Overtime during Close Week but that is one week out of the month. And most of the time if I do work over some days, I would normally leave early on that Friday. So yes it does exist!

It may not be common, but it does exist. I work in a small public accounting firm and generally it's 9-5. Of course I usually end up leaving a little later, and during tax season a couple of hours later and coming in on Sunday, etc. but I definitely don't have to put in what people put in in bigger firms. But it comes with a “price tag”.

I don't know why so many people say it doesn't EXIST. It DOES, it just may not be common. Perhaps they want to paint a realistic picture for you – that you probably won't find such a job easily – and it probably won't have the perks or pay of a larger company.

    But exist it does.

Acct, do we work at the same firm? Haha You're describing my exact situation. The funny thing is, the majority of my accounting classmates I graduated college with went Big 4, yet from what I've heard I make about the same as many of them at a much smaller firm.

I work in public at a small firm and I work 40/week most of the time other than tax season. I am on salary and I get compensated (paid out or vacation) for every hour of overtime I work.
