I know it involves tax treaty for different countries and stuff like that….

I have a friend from China wants help with his return, they have a $5,000 tax treaty.

He only had income from an investment dividend in the US that is over $5000.

what forms will he need to file?

FAR - 9/8/16 (Hopefully it's my last CPA exam, God bless me!)
    REG - 80
    BEC - 81
    AUD - 69, 81

does he have an ITIN? i think its required for international students? see if its the recipients ID# on his 1099-DIV

he needs to file Form 1040NR >$5000 triggers a filing requirement. everything else is pretty similar. looks like you passed REG, so you know where dividends go and how they are taxed, aka cap gain if qualified.

should be a pretty straightforward return if all he has is dividend income. now you can help him file that form by hand or have him use sprintax. the latter is probably a more cost-effective option
