I’ve never been a fan of accounting. I majored in it because I was confused in college and knew accounting would be a “secure” job and good degree to have.

Going to work everyday I know it is not something I want to do the rest of my life. My plan is to pay off my loans in 3 years with my decent accounting salary then do something I love. (I recently just graduated from college)

Not sure if other people were/are in my shoes or if I’m miserable studying for the exam. Accounting has never been for me.

well you are not the only one. Once i passed all cpa exams, I threw all the accounting related materials and deleted them from dropbox, permanently.

    1. You do not have to be a CPA to do accounting work.
    2. I would not get my CPA if my goal was to do something completely unrelated.
    3. Studying sucks. Everyone hates it.
    4. You may think accounting sucks, but once something else becomes your job (even if you enjoy it), it is going to suck too. This is my glass half empty opinion.
    5. The grass is always greener on the other side. If you want to move on from accounting, move on, but just pick something and go forward with it.

Hard to say what's the correct way forward for any individual but I can tell you with 100% certainty that I would not be going through the vomitous process of passing these exams if I wasn't sure accounting is what I want to do. Will a CPA look good on your resume even if you move into another function? Yes, but you can say that about many other credentials, especially if they are more aligned with the work you ultimately want to do.

Maybe try out FP&A for a while and see if you like that better.
I wouldn’t waste valuable time studying for this exam if accounting is not what you want to do long term. I am older than you and changed my career when I was 30ish. While studying for the exam I was constantly contemplating whether it was worth it. Like, if I died it would have been a waste of my days here with my family. So, don’t waste your life on this exam if you don’t like accounting.
It sounds like you are young. You can circle back to the CPA if you decide that is your best option.

Almost always from my phone... please excuse my typos!

I'm in a similar boat as you man.

I would say make your choice based off of whatever maximizes time and money. Debt, unless it's used to make you money, isn't worth having so do your best to get out of debt ASAP.

Stick with CPA only if you know you can generate a large source of income down the line, the short-term sacrifice might be worth it and you can take whatever you've made and use it to shift to another industry you like more.
