Hello Fellow Ninjas! Recently I interview with DOR of PA for Tax Aud trainee program. It is a 1 year training program. My question is how easy or hard it would be to switching from Gov’t to Public Acct.? I am half way through my CPA and working as a full time temp. This gov’t job will be my first “real” job where i get some tax/audit expereince. I am not a big fan of Government. My long term goal is to work for public accounting and one day open up my own firm. I would really like to hear your input regarding this matter. I have searched this forum but there was no thread specificaly to my situtaion. Here are few questions I have:

-Would Gov’t Expreince will look good from Public acconting prespective?

-If I take this job when should I switch to Public?

-Should I keep applyin to public even if I take this job?

    Thank You!

-Would Gov't Expreince will look good from Public acconting prespective?
No different than any other experienced candidate. Doesn't really matter, unless you're working on similar clients (i.e. would you want to work on non-profit/govt/agency if you joined Big 4 later?)

-If I take this job when should I switch to Public?
Whenever you get the right opportunity. Ideally between 1-2 years so you're not prejudiced as a “govt auditor” too much, but also not seen as hopping around. Of course, don't wait, and keep the communications with recruiters and contacts at firms open to express your interest and then go for it at the right time.

-Should I keep applyin to public even if I take this job?
Always apply for a job. It does not hurt to listen and learn. Remember, it's a mutual learning experience.
