Experience Expiration?

    Does anybody know if experience expires in Texas? I can’t find anything definitive either way on the TSBPA website. I see that part time work can’t be spread out more than three years, like passing four sections of the exam can’t be spread out more than 18 months, but that’s different than expiring once attained.

    For example, suppose somebody worked for B4, then quit to go back to school for a MACC, and then took the CPA exam. Would the B4 experience count?

    Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

    As a more general statement, I think the older experience is, the harder it is to get verified at times. Like if your supervisor from that B4 leaves that B4, moves on to another company, then another, you might not be able to catch up with him/her by the time you're ready for licensure, and the B4's HR records may be old enough that the people there at the time might not be comfortable signing off for you if none of them remember you anymore, since it had been 5 or 10 years or something like that. So, even if it doesn't expire, getting the paperwork is order is more complicated as time goes on – especially if the state board has additional questions (for example, if they wanted supporting documentation – paystubs etc. – to prove you worked that period, it could be HR only maintains paystub copies for 5 years, so if you need it after 5 years 3 months, you're out of luck).

    Also, for anyone else reading this (and maybe it would apply to you too), some states require the experience to be gained after the educational requirements are met and/or after the Bachelor's is earned. So, if your Master's is to meet the 150, that might mean the year a the B4 before the Bachelor's wouldn't count, at least in some states. However, in other states, working during the Bachelor's wouldn't count, but experience post-Bachelor's pre-150 would count. So, that's one piece I would check on.

    Sorry I don't have more info specifically for Texas, but hopefully this bumps the thread so a TX person sees it and can help. 🙂

    If you are not sure I would call the State Board and talk to someone there. They should be able to help you.

    I know when I worked at one of the Big 4s they actually had a contact in HR that you would contact if you had left the firm to get your experience signed off. This helped if the manager or whoever you were reporting to left the firm. So, I would also look into that so you are not chasing after people and stress out if they are non responsive.
