Experience Sign Off Question – CA

Hey everyone, I’m in the process of getting my former supervisor who is an active CPA to sign off on my experience.

On the California version of the form it has a place for two people to sign. Next to the first signature box, it asks “ARE YOU THE OWNER?” and then you have to select yes or no. If you select no, then a second person must sign the form as well.

The form doesn’t explain what “owner” means. The person signing my experience letter has title of “Vice President of Accounting”

For anyone who recently got licensed in CA, can you please share your experience on who signed your form and if I need only one signature or do I need two?

    Thanks!!

You need two signatures. Second signature doesn't need to be a CPA but has to be higher level in the company.

Section IV of the CPA LICENSING APPLICANT HANDBOOK:

General accounting experience obtained in private industry or government accounting must be documented on the CGE – Non-Public Accounting Form and be supervised and signed by an individual who holds a valid active license to practice public accountancy in the United States or its territories. If the licensee supervising the experience is the owner of the private industry company, a second signature is not required. If, however, the supervising licensee is not the owner, the experience form must be signed and verified by a second person with a higher level of responsibility in the private industry company or governmental agency. The second signer is not required to hold a license to engage in the practice of public accountancy.

This is really helpful, as I am working on the same process.

Follow-up question: Does does the second signer need to have been in his/her role for same period of time?

To be more specific: If I have a Director signing off on my 1 year of experience, does the VP (second signer) need to have been at the company for that same 1 year?

    Thank you!
