Hello, ALL- I am reaching out because I need your input if applicable. I have a meeting tomorrow with two of the firms’ parnters. That said, I am freaking out as to what this meeting is about! I have received my performance reviews and they were good. I am sick to my stomach; I have been dealing with Migraines as well to make matters worse.

Have anyone out in the A71 community experience such a meeting or know someone who has? No sleep for me tonight. Moreover, I work for a top mid-tier firm, just as a side note.

    Thank you,

Try not to borrow trouble. worrying about it isn't going to help you at all.

    It could be really positive.

True story, partner B caught me in the hallway and asked if I had a few minutes for a meeting. I made noises about getting a notepad, my business card and he said I wouldn't need them. I follow partner B into a conference room and partner A comes in too. They shut the door. I'm a bit nervous now as my mind starts racing. They then tell me they are changing the compensation package a little and give me a raise! effective immediately! woo hoo!

you can imagine how shocked I was.

I'm not saying that's what is happening with you, but it could be.

As I write this thread, tears are falling down my face……….i worked hard, gave them time and effort, to only dispose of me in an instant. Yes, Jimmy Struthers was laid off from the midwest office of this prestigious mid-tier firm. Needless to say, I have no CPA licesnse; after years, and years, and years, and years of failures. I, Jimmy Struthers, have not passed a singles section since my inception in 2010.

I have come to grasp that this “profession” lacks job security!! I have met incompetent MDs/DOs, Dentists, Nurses, PAs, NPs, OTs, PTs. Guess what? They have the right to say ” I don't have an answer for that or I do not know” and its' okay for them to shrug off the problem, while I, the accountant/auditor gets mean faced by the senior or manager on the job when I say the same.

Why….why…why… as a young college individual did I not think about 1. Job Security, 2. Places of employment nearby 3. Job security! 4. Compensation. For crying out loud, PTs and OTs can find were within a 10-15 mile radius! Oh, this facility sucks, let me drive 5 to 10 minutes to the community hospital!

I am so discouraged and disappointed in this profession. Study accounting they said, you'll have a job they said.

They laid you off because you haven't pass the exams after all these years or what? You got good performance reviews and that should be the reason that they would be happy to have you! The fact that they let you go doesn't make too much sense to me…

It's sad but true. What they tell us in school about job security and what we see and read in the mainstream media regarding the profession is a LIE.

What they don't outright tell people is the concept of utilization and the amount of ass kissing and subordination it takes to survive in public accounting.

They have to lie to students and everyone about it to make up for the shitty idea of working 60, 70, 80+ hours a week just so they can still attract people to the profession.

The industry and establishment itself is a scam, but it can still be rewarding for those who can successfully navigate the politics and are lucky enough to get into a good office environment.

Tono I've had my struggles with the profession, but still plan on completing the exam and getting with a large firm and eventually working for a company like Tesla or Space X.

That is my drive to deal with the bs basically. Gotta look at the big picture and end game.

@ tncincy I am 35 years old and this event has never happened before. I am not some 22 y/o who's completely ignorant to the realities of the real world. CPA CMA, I read the reviews myself! To me, I was meeting expectations, with the minor misspelled word, here and there. Other areas for improvement was to communicate with the senior more often regard the audit process. The main guy went and said performance…….after that I zoned out because my reviews did not state such a deficiency.

Am I hirable? I would opine that I am damaged goods and one will accept me……have nice mix of experience…but no license.

Am I allowed as a 35 y/o to grump, moan, and kick rocks for a day? Hell, still considering that switch to Physical Therapy. Job security like a mother and tons of opportunity.

Try and keep in touch with the managers that gave you a good performance review. Take a day and breathe (have a drink tonight). Start buffing up your resume tonight or early tomorrow. Then tomorrow, use all the resources to start looking for a job. I doubt that during the period that you were there, no recruiter made an attempt to connect you to a different job. Also, I know for a FACT that if you did your time with multiple busy seasons, you are more than an asset to OTHER firms or even private accounting dept. I don't even have one.

I genuinely feel that the reason you were laid off was because you were unable to pass the exams. The bottom line is, most firms don't accept a super/eternal-senior unless they were really necessary to the firm. Please don't take my message the wrong way. I've been laid off from a firm before and with WAY less time that you did. But understand, you are still far better than most people, you have years of experience with this firm and you have the experience of obtaining senior accountant level elsewhere. Take a breather and take a small break. Maybe it's time for that vacation you've been putting off.

Got laid off because unable to pass the exam sounds pretty silly to me (if that's the reason), 6+ years of public experience is much more valuable than pass those exams (because they are academic exercises), you get better by working not by doing all those academic exercises. You can probably get another job (public or private) much easily than you think.

Take the rest of this week to cry, kick rocks, do whatever you need to do for you.

Next Monday wake up at your regular time, get ready like you're going to work, and sit at the computer to make your job search your full time job.

I was fired TWICE in less than 14 months time, was in my mid 40's and breadwinner for my family. Yes its shocking (even was the second time although I was laughing even then about it)

You will be MORE than fine. When one door closes and all that cheesy stuff but its true. Had I note gone through those two firings I might not be at my DREAM JOB today.

Clarification: was at the firm for 1.4 years and taken the exam since 2010. My apologies for the confusion.
