Failed FAR but moving on to REG

I failed FAR…miserably actually but since I already paid for REG, I started studying this week. Hopefully I will pass REG then retake FAR before Thanksgiving.

Question – I’m doing the becker review and I breezed through the first two chapters thereby giving me some confidence after the FAR torture. I worked in tax (individual real estate professionals, partnerships and estates) for about 4 years so I’m guessing that’s why it’s going better.

Those who have taken REG, what made it so atrocious? Was it all the tax questions or the law stuff?

I'm going to be the person who says "I finished even though..." not the person who says "I didn't finish because..."

Sorry you failed FAR, hope you crush it next time.

I took reg a week ago and I felt like the first 4 lectures were brutal for me, because I'm pretty weak in tax. I didn't study all of BLAW, just what was emphasized on the Becker outline, and I suggest your focus most of your time on R1-R4. I spent about 1.5 weeks consolidating info between individual, partnerships, c corp, s corp, and estates. Since it sounds like you're doing well in that, I would just continue reviewing it and also spend time going over the emphasized blaw lectures (olinto makes it less dry). Good luck!!

I failed both this window, FAR with a 52, Reg with a 74. Ethics, Federal Security Acts, definitly BLaw and that Federal Tax process section was way harder than tax imho. If you know how to calculate basis, gain/loss for each entity, you should be good for most of tax. Spoiler alert, dont be afraid to select 0 for gain/loss/basis questions. Sometimes, it feels like that is the answer for every question. Oh yeah, watch out for that Property Tax section, that can be tricky.

    CPA (2017)

    REG:  75

    BEC:  76

    FAR:  77

    AUD: 78

    CMA (2019)

    P1: 380

    P2: 360

    AUD - 1st - 60 (12/12), 61 (2/13), 61 (8/13), 78! (11/15)
    REG - 55 (2/16) 69 (5/16) Retake(8/16)
    BEC - 71(5/16) Retake (9/16)
    FAR - (8/16)

REG is very tricky, I had to do 3000 multiple choices in order to grasp the material (Ninja MCQ + Wiley CPA). This might sound like an overkill for a test of 72 multiple choices, but this is exactly what I felt I need to eliminate all element of surprise in the test. And just like @mtaylo24 mentioned, the best 2 hours I spent studying for REG was by making a chart of entities and their taxation characteristics.
I still consider REG lighter than FAR. For FAR I did over 4000 MCQs.

Thank you for the insight. I passed BEC and thought it was super hard. I failed FAR but I can't say it was hard, just really really long and boring. REG so far seems a little more interesting to me so maybe that's helping too.
When I restudy FAR I'm going to be super optimistic and positive about it. Maybe if I keep telling myself I like it I will do better lol. At the very least it won't hurt to try

I'll make a chart of organizations and their taxability. Thx for the tip 🙂
