FAR and research question

    What are everyones thoughts on the following question. Assuming you get the research question correct on the TBS, how do you think that affects your likelihood of passing or failing the CPA exam?

    My thought is that the rest of the exam is so hard and the material so extensive that it’s crucial to get the question correct, and you’re unlikely to pass without it. With that said, getting it correct still means there’s a good chance of failure.

    Those are just thoughts. Curious if any one can shed some light on it. Thanks.

    Hey see you’re an attorney. You have to think FAR alone is harder than the bar. Maybe not the others but the new version of FAR has to be.

    FAR is harder than the NY bar I took. No question.

    Was hoping for an answer as to my question.

    @dgg135 I failed FAR with a 72 and I guarantee it was because I didn’t find the research. Retook it a few days ago and found it easily. The previous attempt was the only time I ever had difficulty finding a research on any test I ever took, but yes the 7.14% is extremely significant. Although on the same note is it truly 1/7th or is it something like 1/50(using the assumpion the other 6 countable sims have 49 fill in the blanks) we’ll never know. Unless someone wants to inquire of the AICPA.

    I got a very strange research question and I'm very sure I got it wrong. Put in an answer that seemed kind of related but not at all straightforward. I passed. On the other sims there were maybe 2 that I felt I got <50% right.

    @itooshallpass yeah that’s what happened to me in the previous attempt. Very vague research question. Wasn’t 100 percent satisfied with my response. I was 100 percent satisfied with my response on the most recent attempt though. I should be good. I think I passed cleanly, but you never know on these. On one test I was 100 percent sure I passed and got the lowest score out of any test I ever took. Was insane.

    I once saw a video from Phil Yeager saying that if you can't get the research question in 3-4 minutes then to move on. He said he has never heard of someone who failed just because of the research question. He said they probably aren't worth very much.

    @RyonT no offense to Mr. Yeager but I think that's terrible advise. I'm pretty sure I got the research question right on all three exams that had it, but I don't ever think I got it in 3-4 minutes. REG particularly took me maybe 10-15 minutes, then I found exactly what they were looking for, just took some trial and error.

    @dgg135
    I don't think it's any more or less important than the other sims. But I think you're right in the sense that it should be some easy points that you can bank on.

    I felt that 3-4 minutes was a bit short too. I think Bob Monette said 8-10. For FAR, I spent about 8 minutes and said F**k it. I know I got it wrong, but I was in my first tbs testlet, and didn't want to get bogged down. His logic makes sense to me though. I can't imagine it is worth very much. I ended up finishing the exam with about 8 minutes left, so in hindsight I probably could have spent a bit more time on it….I'll find out in June I guess.

    Hey..could be a competitor trying to sandbag Yaeger with that BS advice lol. This is an example of the critical thinking skills necessary for the new version of the exam. People passing BEC spelling “advice” like that? Further evidence that these tests are subjectively graded more than people realize lol. Maybe I’d be a CPA already if I spelled it like “realise”

    It's not your spelling holding you back, it's your bizarre and hostile attitude.

    @dudley I wasn’t taking shots at you. All I was saying is that I’ve seen borderline BEC’s(75-78) where people paseed who are known to misconjugate words worse than DJ Khaled. I’m sure you’re smart bro. Maybe they spell advice the way you do in England so you might be good. How do you spell “ice” where you come from? “E.y.e.s?” Miss that and tear up diluted earnings per share, modified accrual gov recs, and percentage of completion full journal entries. Just playing with you. You’re a CPA right? That’s all that matters. Sorry if I offended you.

    Lol, I didn’t spell “passed” that way btw and even if I did why can’t I go back and edit? I proofread everything; no way I would’ve overlooked that typo lol. Webmaster trying to undermine my credibility lol ok ok.
