FAR – Wiley SIMs accurate?

Just wondered if anyone had any input on how well the Wiley SIMs for FAR represent the “real deal”. I’ve only taken BEC so far, and for that, Wiley’s written communication assignments were similar, but of course written assignments are worlds different from SIMs!

The SIMs I have taken in WTB seem to be pretty straight-forward and non-intimidating…so of course I’m hoping that means that I’ll do better on the SIMs than the MCQs, but I was wondering if anyone had feedback on how similar the WTB SIMs are to the “real” ones.

    Thanks!

I got all excited when I saw you posted, and thought “Now I'll have an answer!” haha.

I'm taking this test tomorrow, so if there's not an answer before then, I'll post some feedback tomorrow. πŸ™‚ (Yeah, I know, a matter of hours before the exam was a bit late to be asking…)

The SIMs were actually very similar to the Wiley ones! They weren't entirely, but more than I'd honestly expected. The biggest difference is that whereas Wiley's SIMs would have the credit or debit pre-selected for you, the real exam you had to figure out which was which. Like, in Wiley, if you were recording deprecation expense, you'd have:

    Depreciation Expense…………[______________]

    ….Accumulated Depreciation…………………………..[_____________]

On the real one you'd either have:

    Depreciation Expense…………[______________]….[_____________]

    ….Accumulated Depreciation..[______________]….[_____________]

Or instead of having the title pre-filled, you'd have a listing for each spot of a handful of accounts that *might* be the account you want.

However, at its core, the problems were still similar…with the exception of the research question because I'd never had a research question in Wiley, but it wasn't too difficult (that is, assuming I got it right… πŸ˜‰ ).

I would say the wording on the exams for the simulation is rather tedious and since it is the last part of the exam, our brains (or maybe just mine) completely blanks out from all the junk thrown at you in the questions……

However, if you are fundamentally sound in each of the topics, you should be fine!

    BEC: Passed
    REG: Passed
    FAR: Almost Past (lol)
AUD: I thought I passed with flying colors, but I wasn't close!

carpediem posted this in the FAR Exam Experience thread, and I thought I'd re-post it here, since it looks like my experience isn't necessarily standard:

“Anyway, my MCQ testlets didn't seem to vary in difficult a great deal. I would say that my last two testlets were possibly more difficult than the first – both had a few more computational questions than the first one. But the SIMS were insane!!! Insane. Wiley TOTALLY did not prepare me for the SIMS. I was nailing the SIMS on Wiley. Like, 100%s every time. The Wiley SIMS required about 1/10 of the time, knowledge and background information compared to the actual exam. I would breeze through Wiley SIMS in under 5 minutes. Less in many cases. Boy, was I floored to see the crazy SIMS on my testlet. There is one I feel I likely did well on, and I'm almost 100% sure I nailed the research SIM. But the other 5 – forget it. I did my best. I wasn't guessing for the most part. But I had only left 1 hour and 15 minutes for all the SIMs, and was left with 11 minutes for the last 2 (most difficult, IMHO) SIMs. I did my best to fairly quickly throw something together that wasn't total BS, but I KNOW for one of them, I was just wrong in my calculations. Hoping I get partial credit for hitting the right accounts? “

I agree with Elizabeth's post about the JE's… I did have a few WTB sims that were harder than the sims I actually got. Most of the WTB sims were easier though. I'd say the sims on the exam were moderately difficult. Not impossible. I'm an senior accountant in industry though so I'd rather prepare JE's then answer theoretical mcq on stuff that is very specific…

    FAR - 7/13 - 72, 11/13- 74, 2/14- 82!!! Best score ever (for me)!!!
BEC - 1/14 - 75!!! Perfect score! First Pass! YAY!!!
    AUD - 8/14 - 80!!!
    REG - 5/14 - 72, 10/14 - 66, 1/15 - 78 - DONE FOREVER!!!

I would say that the SIMS in the Wiley Test Bank were easier than the ones I got on the actual exam. For the most part, I just practiced the ones in the test bank and went in to the exam thinking they were going to be a breeze. No. There was a lot more to read and the content was more complex. However, I'd say some of the SIMS in the Wiley Test BOOK are comparable or sometimes even longer/more difficult than the ones on the actual exam. I'd definitely prepare using both the WT Bank and WT Book.

    FAR 66, 80
    AUD 86
    REG 76
    BEC 74, 77 - DONE!!

@vlc1982 I've used the Wiley textbook and test bank for every part to date and I 100% agree that the book SIMS are much more difficult than the test bank SIMS and more in line with what I've seen on my exams. The upshot to the test bank is that it's more efficient if you are pressed for time. I agree that using a combo of the test bank plus the book gives a good mix of moderate to difficult SIMS to practice with.

Thinking of buying the Wiley testbank for FAR strictly for SIMS. I am currently studying with NINJA MCQ and Becker flashcards for my re-take of FAR. Is the $150 purchase of Wiley test bank worth it to increase FAR score by 10pts?
