    Career tip 1) Interviewing

Never use Linkedin like you use Facebook. Employers do a background check on your profile and the things you post online. So you don't want some previous internet feud or an inappropriate post costing you your job.

I am working in accounting and payroll department. So my tip is about interviewing and landing in a job.

    Tips for Entry level accountants:

If you are looking for entry level position, please take a baby step in your career with reference. Otherwise, it will be tough to get a job.

If you are not familiar/experience with the job requirement like software that the employer is using for day-to-day business. Please let them know, that you are not familiar about the software, but you are willing to learn it.

Don't forget to follow up with thank you letter once you are done with the interview. If you didn't receive the call from employer after 1week of your interview, don't hesitate to contact them.

Many of them knows all about these tips very well. This will help only for Entry level Accountants.

General: Find the right balance between salary and job satisfaction. Six figures a year is a lot worse than mid-five figures if you're completely miserable at work every day….

State your career accomplishments or goals on your resume and in the interview no matter how insignificant you may think they are to the actual position you're applying for. Ex. non-accounting certifications/licenses or attempting such. Doing so can potentially show employers that you're willing to work and go an extra mile even though it's not necessary.

I was in banking for 8 years prior to landing my current position this year as a Tax Auditor. I listed accomplishments such as attaining my license to sell life insurance and annuities, attempting the notary exam (though failed a portion), and that I wanted to obtain my CPA. I attempted these for my own personal reasons and was not required for my bank job.

After I was hired, I heard through the grapevine that that played a big role in me getting the position over someone else.

Interviewing: Attend practice/mock interviews whenever possible! They are great ways to practice your answers to typical questions and receive honest, usable feedback. If mock interviews are not available, ask a friend or family member to sit in for you; the information feedback may be less useful, but at least you will get used to wording your answers.

Tips for career fair: even if most company tables don't accept resumes, be sure to talk to those your are interested. This would help you practice networking with professionals in important settings and make an impression, and you might end up getting an interview out of it. But don't have high expectation from the fair, and the recruiters mainly just want to have a casual talk with bright students. Just be prepared and learn from how people network.

    4) General Carrer Tip – Federal Jobs

When applying for a federal job, make sure you take the requirements and minimum qualifications from the job announcement and put them in your resume. If you don't have these, you'll NEVER get selected for an interview. Make sure you check the posting dates for the jobs and ensure you have ALL of the required documents submitted BEFORE the cut off date. Once you upload everything, go back and double check to make sure all of the documents actually loaded and will open in a readable format! Often time, that transcript may say it's loaded but it won't open. So you won't get a call back. Don't let this be you!

A question I asked in interviews that always got a “wow, great/tough question response” that isn't typical:

Is there anything you wish you knew going into the recruiting process/starting your career that you now know?

Not only did I get positive feedback from asking something other than the typical “what do you love about your job”, but I also did learn some valuable things.

Especially for younger professionals…be sure to “google” yourself and see what comes up. This is a great time to make your facebook profile private. Be sure to delete or hide those photos of you “under an influence” or complaining about a job you hate. Even if these types of information are not supposed to influence a hiring decision, I guarantee that if it is a close choice between you and another applicant – it will matter to the hiring manager.

    4) General Career Tip

No matter what career path you choose, you must learn how to use Microsoft Excel to your benefit. If anyone asks me for college advice, I will always tell them to make sure to take more than the basic excel class offered at the institution. This will put you above the average users.

If already out of college I would recommend any of the Excel training programs out there or even the tutorials provided through Youtube.

@Michelle21496 – Great tip. i have been trying to get into federal.

Question: When you say “take the requirements and minimum qualifications from the job announcement and put them in your resume” is this just to get someone to see your resume to bring in you for an interview and then you plead your case or do you actually have to have the qualifications?

    #614631

As a hospital controller, I'm in the position to hire accountants. My tip is a result of my last interview:

DO NOT imply that you are just looking for something to keep you busy until you find a better job. Be very conscious of what you say and make it sound like you want this job to be long term employment, even if you don't. It was easy for me to decide on someone else, and who knows, that person might have gained some really useful knowledge for their future “dream job.”

It means if the announcement says that the position will be sweeping floors, making coffee, and preparing budgets, make sure that in your resume you show that you have swept floors, made coffee, and prepared budgets. They have HR specialists that look specifically for the keywords to match the announcement. If your application does not have those keywords included, you get marked as not matching their criteria. For those jobs, it's best to start a new resume, and write it to fit the announcement. Then, fill in the additional info from your current resume. (Former life working in corporate headquarters for a government contractor) And yes, you do have to be truthful that you have the qualifications. They will find out sooner or later.

@Texan_Stuck_In_OK. Thanks for the input. I see where the problem is; i didn't cater my resume to the announcement since i thought they used the KSAs to figure out who was qualified.

    1) It's not always what you know, but who you know. Get out and meet people, socialize, get involved in things.

    4) Don't burn bridges, you never know when you may need someone down the road.
