FREAKING OUT

Okay, so it’s taken me 2.5 years to get here – but I finally got my 4th passing score last night.

I sat for AUD (last exam) on August 18. Per CPA Central my FAR credit expired on August 31. I emailed the WA state people and asked what impact this would have and was told none as long as I sat before the expiration.
Logged onto CPA Central today to start the application process for my license to get my candidate ID number. FAR says lost credit and AUD says score received September 11.

Legit freaking out. It makes me sick to my stomach to think about having to re-take FAR (among all the other personal things I have going on in my life right now). I went back through my email and I took FAR on February 2 (2017) so technically it had been a little over 18 months – however, my expiration wasn’t until August 31 so I still technically did as I was instructed.

I had to transfer states in the middle of all of this because KS required residency and my husband is in the military and we had to move. I do have it in writing from WA that I just had to sit BEFORE the EXPIRATION. Nothing about sitting 18 months from the date I sat for FAR.

I don’t know if I should call WA or just continue the license application. I’m sure 38.5 weeks pregnant emotions don’t help but I’m a nervous wreck right now because I don’t know how to continue this revolving door of exams and I don’t feel like I should have to.

I think you’re fine! As long as you sat for Audit before 8/31..

Every State is different. Some States count from the date that you sat for the exam and other states count from the date that you passed the exam. I would call WA and ask them what their State requirements are outside of what you are seeing in CPA central. This would be a situation that I would definitely appeal and get an extension because you sat for the exam on August 11 before the expiration. I think you are fine.

Find that email thread if you can. Most states have reciprocity so what goes in one state goes in most others.

But what was the AUD score? or did i miss that part.
The NASBA computers are just machines. I'd research for your specific state, but if you sat inside the expiration window, I am sure the computer is just saying its expired because it doesn't know any better.

I passed audit with a 79 this round.

I just called NASBA and they put me on a long hold. When they came back they said they are having this issue across multiple jurisdictions and are resetting the system tonight and tomorrow FAR should say credit again. She confirmed the same as my email – it goes by the date I sat which was before the date of expiration.

The exams are hard enough, the administrative part should be easy!!

Can anyone tell me about the AICPA ethics portion? What I was researching was taking me to a payment portal for a book. Is there an exam code as part of that? My coworkers were licensed 4-5 years ago but they said the didnt have to pay for the ethics exam for their license application so I'm not sure if things changed or I'm looking in the wrong places.

The NASBA page for Washington states the 18 month window begins on the date the exam was taken, not the date scored, or at the end of that testing quarter.
I don't mean to rain on your parade, but I think you might have a bit of a battle on your hands.
Find that e-mail, and any other proof. You should also start compiling reasons for the delay in passing all within the 18 month window. Active duty/station change for spouse, as well as score delays in 2017/2018 would be my first 2 items to list in your extension request.
Best of luck to you! The NASBA website is not always 100% accurate, but I can't find anything on the WA CPA website in regards to this matter.

This WA page has the laws governing CPA, but I cannot find anything regarding the 18 month rule, or when the clock states.

NJ rounds to the end of the month that you passed your first exam. Trying to find something similar for WA.
The 18-month period begins on the day you sit for and pass your first section of the examination. The actual date of expiration is then “rounded off” to the end of the month. For example, if you sit for (and pass) one part on April 12, 2016, 18 months is up on October 12, 2017, but your credit will expire on October 31, 2017.

    Thanks for all the info!!

Kansas also went to the end of the month for the 18 months regardless of the day you sat. Washington obviously goes by the day you sat.

Back in January I had everything transferred and WA accepted my scores without modification so I personally don't see how they can hold me to a different standard now (obviously I'm looking out for myself though).

I asked Kansas for an extension because I lost BEC during the time I had to wait for a transfer and wasn't granted one (however I didn't anticipate AUD taking me most of the year this year at that time either, so in hindsight that doesnt really matter).

I wanted to get my license processed ASAP because the military is moving us AGAIN. But I suppose waiting to confirm tomorrow isnt going to hurt anything. Just to make sure it is in fact a system glitch like I was told on the phone.

Update in case anyone else is dealing with similar issues…

The system glitch wasnt fixed. I called this morning and they had no idea what I was talking about. I was deferred to my state coordinator who in previous experiences hasnt provided a lot of guidance, direction, or comfort.

I did send an email with attachments showing I was told I had to sit before the expiration date and my confirmation of attendance from the testing center showing I did exactly that. So here's to hoping for an answer soon since the last time I contacted my coordinator it took over 3 weeks to get a response.

Hate to say this @Jdub, but state coordinator's aren't very responsive right away. If I were you I would keep calling NASBA people since they undertake exam administrative process.

Yeah I'm at a complete loss. Everytime I've called NASBA they refer to my state coordinator.

At this point I'm honestly not even sure what she has to do with anything. My FAR credit says expires 8/31 and my AUD credit says received 9/11. Which was the score release, not the date I sat. I've provided NASBA with my attendance record of 8/18 and and the email I have saying to sit prior to 8/31 they just say to talk to my coordinator.

I called my state board and provided them all the same documentation and they wont issue my license until NASBA fixes the issue because they administer the exams.

I cant imagine I'm the only person that was right at the 18 month window. The entire thing is defeating. The exams are hard enough – but here's one more thing just to make it harder. It's ridiculous.

I completely sympathize with the administrative portion being so difficult. I've had issues with NASBA where I'd call and they didn't have a clue what I was asking. The majority of my issues started when I applied to the board for my license. Long story short I've needed multiple background checks, multiple transcripts, and multiple experience forms in order to prove I am qualified for the license. Still waiting on a background check from a state that cannot process this request online, you have to snail mail everything to them and wait weeks for a background check in the mail. So I'm months into this process and still no license. One thing I'll say, it took NASBA 5 weeks to send my scores to the board. It's so unfortunate a lot of states do not allow you to start the app process without scores cause it takes them forever. Mine does allow you to start before scores, but the process hasn't been any quicker with all the other issues I've run into.

Please keep us posted on this. I've been reading different stories on another71 and I get so invested because I know how horrible this entire process is. I hope it ends in your favor!

I checked CPA Central this morning without hearing back from NASBA before I called again and it was all corrected!! 4 credits as it should be all showing the appropriate dates.

I would be lying if I said my husband wasn't fussing at me to be patient but when this process has been so intense I had none. So lesson learned on my part I guess. But the administrative part of the entire process has been long and frustrating.

Now I'm just waiting on my boss to sign off so I can do my application. Thankfully WA allows you to submit it online so hopefully the state board doesn't take as long as others I've been reading about – but I suppose that's where my patience will have to kick in 😉
