So I initially took BEC in the first quarter and failed it by 1 point. To be honest, I felt like I scored in the 80s for that exam but that’s a story for another time. I’m going to take the new exam in a week and while I’m scoring relatively well on the multiple choice, im doing abysmal on the TBS. I need advice on how to adequately prepare for the TBS. I went through every TBS in my Gleim materials but it’s really impossible to remember every small detail and I feel like that’s what’s being tested on the TBS. Not necessarily general knowledge but the application of small details.

    Any advice would be appreciated!

Don't try to remember to much. My advice especially for BEC is to try and tell a story around the topics that could be TBS. It's not so much cramming in a bunch of details for the sake of memorizing but understanding a process. Take for instance Cost Acctng. Can you flow from Raw Materials all the way to COGS with all the subtotals in between? Or indentify the key terms associated with Globalization, Activity Based Costing, or Inventory variance?

This is your opportunity to put the “jargon” in your own words so you make memorizing a little easier. For every key term you need 2-3 lay words that go with it. Maybe try writing a summary of all the topics you struggle with in two-three paragraphs and see how many of your own words relate back to how the text explains the topic.

    Couldnt agree more with @Wanna_B_TXCPA2014.

You shouldn't worry about memorizing things. Just try to increase your understanding of the topics. Memorization will come.

    BEC - 79
    FAR - 77
    REG - 77

thanks, really appreciate the advice guys. i'll definitely be running through everything again.

my only worry is that on the task based sims, ill get something i completely don't know how to solve on a topic that falls on the outlier of the typical cpa materials.

Don't know how the new test is but the biggest thing that helped me with the written responses is structuring your response like this – tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them, then repeat what you told them. It takes practice to get used to repeating yourself but it makes it less overwhelming because only a few sentences have to be technical.

    BEC - 88 8/29/15
    REG - 82 11/14/15
    AUD - 83 1/8/16
    FAR - 80 2/29/16
