Just got the lovely score of 71 on BEC. My Becker expired right after I took FAR last November, so for my BEC retake, I just used Gleim MCQ, Ninja Audio, and went through my Becker book.

I’m thinking about starting from scratch (with Ninja as a secondary review) so I can get this last test done. I liked the Gleim questions even though they were overkill sometimes, however I’ve heard good things about Roger’s lectures.

Anyone have any input?

Roger has good lectures, but it might not be worth it for BEC. His test bank isn't great and there's only like 750+ questions. His cram course might help, but I'd check out his free videos on youtube first. The only lectures I found useful for BEC were for cost accounting and financial management. He may have some already on there.

Currently using Roger with Ninja MCQ, Audio, & Notes. He's energetic and kept me engaged for the most part. I'd say I'm more prepared for BEC from using the NINJA products than I am from using Roger's lectures. After i finished his lectures and went through the text I stopped referring to his material and went straight into NINJA.

Guess we'll find out this Friday when I sit for BEC.

How was your exam experience for BEC? Things you thought you should have focused more on coming out of the exam?

I gotta agree with RE2PECT in that the Roger MCQ bank is not all that extensive. That being said his lectures are really great and help immensely with the more difficult sections (i.e variance analysis). I passed BEC with an 85 using Ninja MCQ and Roger, and I definitely felt that the Ninja MCQ were essential, however that could change now with the new exam format since the exams will have much less emphasis on MCQ…

Thanks everyone. I've heard some of Roger's lectures and honestly they're a bit annoying for me ha but if they worked for people, I'm open to consideration.


@Tyler23, there was a TON of IT stuff – a lot of terminology that I didn't come across on any review course I was using. COSO were easy points, and the formulas weren't horrible.

Gleim is pretty good but don't expect lectures like Roger if you are a lecture guy. It is the ultimate self-study review course, the questions are difficult and the text is a drag (Not as boring as Wiley though), but if you can get a decent handle on both you should be golden. I'd recommend doing the demo to see if it is for you. CPAExcel also has a 14 day one right now…

I don't have any experience with Gleim, but I'd recommend Roger to anyone.

The Roger course has been enough for me. Even without supplemental MCQ's. I don't have an accounting background other than the classes required to sit for the exam.

This might not be a popular opinion, and I love this forum, but I'd suggest getting Roger and waiting to buy additional MCQ's until you learn that you actually need them. Just my opinion.

CPAExcel for free for 2 weeks also sounds like a solid option.

I am using Roger, but I also have all of Gleim's textbooks. They were given to me for free by an old accounting instructor. I can't make a comment overall about Gleim's program as I have no access to the online portal. I'd say the Gleim texts are good for most topics. They are a little stuffy and stiff at times, the MCQs are harder than Roger's but there are more TBS questions in each chapter. And, they have clarified some things for me that Roger gave rather muddy explanations of. Or, let's just say that they have been good as a “second opinion”-type source.

Roger is good for most people. I like it. The lectures are good and keep you motivated. The text is good but contains a lot of info that you really don't need (Gleim's is much more concise on many FAR topics, I've noticed.) Roger's MCQ are very much like those you will find on the exam, but the explanations for each question are often miles long and shouldn't be.

I know a lot of people on here buy the Ninja products. I'm sure they are good but I'd say that whatever review course you have, I think they all provide enough MCQs to practice on and only after you've totally exhausted those and still feel like you need more, then buy them. Or, just buy Ninja as your review course and that's it.

I don't think I'd recommend any particular review course to anyone. They all have their faults; it seems like Becker has a ton of faults nowadays (sky-high price for only 18 months was why I didn't buy that one; Roger was 2 years for like half of Becker's price.) As I said in my Yelp review about Roger, “it's probably the best one out there, with the least amount of faults.”

Hey, is there anyone on here who uses one called Surgent? It's newer in the market – they do offer half off if you can prove that you flunked all the sections at least once on Roger/Becker/any other review course and can provide printouts of your scores and receipts.

BTW – addendum about Roger's BEC – I've heard that before too, about it not being very good for BEC. I actually started reading the BEC book and was so unimpressed with it that I decided to push it back and do AUD first. I might even do REG before doing BEC, especially given that BEC will now have TBS's and a whole bunch of other stuff that I have no idea how to tackle at this point.

I've used only Gleim for FAR and BEC and have done well. For BEC specifically, all I really did was read the book and do MCQs. I started out watching the videos and doing practice WC but I felt like it was just wasting my time (although for FAR and REG the videos seem to be helpful). The Gleim book is boring as heck but it is very detailed and straightforward, so long as you have the patience and discipline to do a self-study type course.

A lot of people put so much emphasis on MCQs. Don't get me wrong – practice questions are essential to passing. But I make sure I very thoroughly read everything and try my best to understand before I start busting out MCQs. I feel like that's how you truly learn the whole concept and see the big picture. Spending most of your time practicing MCQs can allow you to just memorizing bits and pieces of it.
