Heading into BEC

I’ve got BEC next Wednesday, December 6th and I just don’t know how to feel about my preparation up to this point. I’ve maintained the same approach that I’ve used for the other 3 exams, 2 of which I passed (still waiting on AUD), but it just doesn’t seem like I’m prepared as well. I’m still averaging 85% on progress tests, going to take my first mock exam today, but I’m not sure why my progress tests show I’m prepared yet I don’t feel prepared. Anyone have some advice? Could it be from burnout or lack of sleep?

Also, I’m not sure how to feel about the memos on BEC. There’s really not much a person can do to prepare for them other than know the format of the memo. I’m confident I can put together and intro and a closing, but the body is what concerns me since who knows what they might pick for a topic. Does anyone have tips for tackling this part of the exam?

I had the same questions heading into BEC last week, waiting on results.

My written strategy was to jot down keywords, figure out what I wanted to “tell them” (thesis) and outline how that lays out.
Do a few written practice questions, I would say do 3 in a row and see how much time that took and compare against the bec written guides or lectures available, see if you’re hitting what they tell you to.
If nothing else doing a few practice ones gave me a good idea how much time to allot for that section

And for general review? – read through the recent BEC study group posts, lots of people sharing their experience from the exam

impressive scores RB and solid advice.

Matt what review course are you using? Hitting 85s consistently is a really good sign, depending on your review course most folks end up scoring a few points higher on their exams then their practice scores. I use roger and for all three of my sections so far I have been trending around mid/high seventies to mid 80s on my MCQ and SIM work cumulatively and have scored higher than that by several points.

good luck and be confident, i would be if i were you, sounds like you are setting yourself up nicely.

Thanks Tommy — I'm using Becker, about to take my first mock exam. My progress test scores show that I have some idea of what I'm doing, so now I just have to be confident in myself I guess! This 8 month marathon is definitely hitting me hard right now but I just need to push through these next 6 days and then I'll take two weeks off until the scores come out and see if I'm done or retaking something.

I scored about 6 point higher on FAR than my mock exams and 13 points higher on REG compared to my mocks, so I'm hoping for at least a 70 on this first mock exam attempt!

RB — will do. Tossed a post in there about supplementing Becker with additional MC. Hopefully my AUD results can come out in the same ballpark as your AUD score!

@RB are we responsible for knowing FAR for this BEC exam…I ask because there were some people saying that FAR can pop up anywhere and I had taken FAR more than a year ago. I'm wondering if it's going back and reviewing it. Thanks!

@jiji There are some concepts that come from FAR in BEC, but I wouldn't worry about it too much. Imo, there's more AUD concepts to remember than FAR with COSO and internal auditing.

    BEC - 84
    FAR - 82
    REG - 78

Ok thank you Jennifer! I hope so. I'm retaking the BEC second time. I remember last time I took it in May this year I struggled with this TBS because it was related to far something about impairment and I couldn't figure it out. I wasn't expecting that kind of question to be there. I'm hoping that doesn't happen again.

I am going to second what Jennifer said.

From all of the written lectures I've seen they said theoretically any content could come up in written, but my expectation would be that its going to focus on BEC information. The practice problems I had covered some things like FIFO / LIFO inventory valuations, but they were relatively common concepts (for accountants) to discuss. I wouldn't start going over other material specifically for it.

@MattLorenz – I have BEC next Saturday 12/9. I put 3 weeks in back in October then moved to AUD for the last 3-4 weeks as I had that yesterday. I'm looking at BEC again today and am feeling behind as well. going to focus my efforts on the equations and math portions. this is the last one (pretty sure i passed AUD yesterday) so im all in, til 1 or 2 AM each night after work this week. gonna finish in this window and so will you.
