    Hello A71 community,

I am taking REG on Friday, and have been having problems with finding the correct authoritative literature when I have been doing the practice research Sims in my Becker review course.I have gotten 1 out of maybe 5 that I’ve tried finding.

Do you guys have any tips on how to navigate the IRC? I try doing the advanced search and searching within, etc. but cannot seem to get the right answer. So many search results to look through and they never seem to be the right ones.

I know this is easy points and I’d hate to miss them.

Again, any tips would be appreciated! Thank you.

First of all, not to be insulting, but there are usually two databases so you want to make sure it's the right one. Second, use the back button so you can quickly peruse results without starting over every time.

But yeah, this should be easy points.

So your issue is navigating the IRC itself , but not really what you might be using as “keywords” to pull up stuff?

I don't know how it is on the *** real REG test***, but using Ninja experience, I read the question, and see what they are asking for, for example: taxpayer is expecting their income to go up, and want to avoid penalties, so what subsection of IRC describes estimated tax payments , required installments, and due dates?

–> Start off with keywords, they might not all pull up something or pull too much up. For the question above, I might put in “estimate tax” “tax installment ” “installment payment”

–> When I click on each IRC, just by reading the header, you know what that section will discuss, so if its IRC focusing on installment sales, obviously go back and try another IRC instead of wasting your time there. Another thing is just logic… tax payments, I think of it as “more towards the end, wrap up” sort of thing, so instead of navigating IRC from the top, I start from the bottom to make better use of time .

If you don't know how to use search-within, I wonder if you can use “ctrl + f” on the actual REG test, and just type in a keyword there and navigate.

–> And of course, as with ANY question, read to see what they want: section, subsection, paragraph, sub-paragraph

the answer to top example: 6654(c)

I m not sure if that's the kind of help you were looking for, but I hope it does help in someway! Good luck!

    Won't know until you try.

    Thank you for your replies!

My problem isn't so much keywords, it's just filtering through the 500+ results that pop up, and navigating it down to the correct one. I have passed both AUD and FAR and never had an issue with finding the authoritative literature for those but the IRC has just been a pain in the butt. And the Ctrl F doesn't work on the real exam, or at least in the test center I've been to.

you kind of have to find the right subsection and then do “search within” for the keyword you think it should be. So for example, if the question has to do with corporate taxation, go to the section of the IRS (on the left) dealing with corporate tax, and then do “search within”. I hope this helps.

I always try to pick the rarest word that might fit the question, to provide the fewest results to have to sift through.
