    I passed all 4 section of cpa exam. I have been looking for the job within 4 months now and still not getting any job interview. I am living in orange county, CA. I have called/ emailed to partners/ hiring managers in my area but no good news coming up. I am really disappointed and thinking whether CPA designation is a good choice for me. I am really stressful with my current situation. I am thinking should i change my career to another industry (medical likely) so that I can find the job easily. Is there anyone having the same problem with me? how did you do to overcome it?

    Honestly, I don't like working with recruiting agencies. I have experienced with them before when they asked me to meet them. They only have temp to hire or contract which I am not interested in. I have some friends who have worked with them under temp to hire/ contract. They just promised that candidates might have the chances to convert to permanence but never happened. And seems they don't have much job opportunities in public accounting. I am interested in tax position because I want to open my own office after I have enough experience. Likely, I may find someone with HR experience to revise my resume for a better chance. Do you guys know which links I can get helped with this?

    I am surprised, a lot of the firms look for accountants. I just went to a job fair in a local college to recruit for our firm; we have a hard time to find right candidates. Our firm interviewed few people during the summer, but they were not qualified. Now recruiting in college is hard too because big four accounting firms grab when they are juniors. Recruiters and HR sometimes send me message or emails through linkedin about jobs opportunities.
    I would think you would have a lot of opportunities especially you have passed all four parts. Why don't you move for job opportunities?

    @Smartcpa, I stuck with a temp agency for 6 months after my college internship, and that jump-started my career into public accounting. I would say that temp agency is probably close to the last resort. It is hard to network into a field that you do not have experience on. Another way to job hunt is to put those 3 big CPA letters right next to your name in LinkedIn, download a top 50 accounting firms of 2015, and start adding and messaging HR managers and staff from top to bottom.
    I am not sure how interested you are on the Big 4, but they provide free webcast for CPE, and actually they keep records of people who attend. So if you are planning to apply for the Big 4, being on their CPE list gives you extra points.

    @smartcpa,

    I have a feeling that you're not a native speaker. If so, it might be a big factor in what's holding you back.

    Where is your company located? I don't think it has a shortage of qualified candidate in OC, CA.

    @Mayo

    yes, I have been in the States for 5 years only. I am not a native speaker, and I don't have a problem with communication. I have some friends who are Chinese. We had the high GPA. We passed CPA exam. We can speak english well. I don't think we are underqualifed because of not native speakers.

    ” We can speak english well. ”

    Ok, then nevermind. That is usually the issue with non native speakers. A lot of campus recruiting is rapport with the recruiting team as well as your GPA and what not. So personality/networking goes a long way.

    I live in OC and I admit the competition is fierce, especially for B4, so be ready if you really want to go for them. But they're not the end of the world, there are MANY great and local firms, trying to get candidates who have passed or are willing to pass the CPA exam. Instead of looking in the top 50 firms in the US, I would look at the top 50 firms in OC and start emailing and trying to connect with the recruiters on linkedin. Right now is the PRIME hiring time so I would start trying to see if there are any meet the firms near by and try to crash that. I feel that SoCal is the anomaly where CPA candidates have to FIGHT to find a job. A friend of mine who offered to refer me to PWC advised me to not go because it's pretty miserable.

    My stance on recruiters is really neutral, because I know some that are really annoying. HOWEVER, there are a few that are extremely nice to me and really want me to succeed; they ALSO tend to know public accounting recruiters as well, so they can be your ticket in. There are some locals firms that I've been in contact with, such Windes and Armanino (I hope Jeff doesn't get annoyed when I post their names), that are looking. You could try those. They have varying locations though.

    @Mayo, I don't think not being a native English speaker is an issue. English is my second language and I don't have an issue to find jobs.e
    @Smartcpa, I live in Western Mass, I don't know if there is a shortage of qualified candidate in this area, but I would say small firms like us do have a hard time to find qualified employees. Our firm is pretty small and want to grow. Most of the kids, including myself want to work for big firms.

    I think @mayo is referring more about social skills than language barriers. I can sort of relate to that when I was fresh out of college.

    @Vanessachy, I'm speaking based on my experience interning, working, and helping to recruit while I was in public accounting. Obviously, it's more of a general statement.

    That being said, good written and spoken communication is one of the biggest hindrances of foreign students. It just is what it is. And seeing that soft skills in accounting are becoming more and more in demand, it's something that will most definitely impact you in your job search.

    Put another way, a recruiter would rather hire a sociable student with a 3.5 GPA who has client/customer facing work experience and participates in on-campus organizations and/or volunteering. Compared to an awkward and shy student who has a 4.0, has no other activities and never attends recruiting events (which honestly does describe a lot of foreign students with less than decent English skills).

    These are extreme examples, but I guess i'm just trying to make the point that social skills and personality matter a lot in on-campus recruiting. Grades matter of course, but they are just one dimension of your “package”.

    Anyhow, it doesn't seem to be an issue to the OP, so he might just be one of the unlucky few who just slip through the cracks. Recruiting is not a perfect process after all.

    EDIT: To summarize, foreign students tend to either have difficulty socializing due to language barriers (because some have poor spoken English skills) or cultural barriers (they sometimes are shy to engage in small talk/networking/etc).

    And it's completely understandable. My second language is Spanish, and my skills in spoken Spanish kind of suck (although I can read and write just fine). So I would probably fall in one of the above groups if I was trying to recruit for a job in a Spanish speaking country.

    @Mayo & Loo, I agree with you and can see the point, it is definitely more challenging for us to find public accounting jobs. we cannot never speak perfect English, but we can always improve it. We will always have accent; yet, we can always make sure that we speak clearly and use the proper grammar. I agree with you about personality, foreign students have a hard time to interact with Americans because of language and culture barriers. I also think that interview skill is important. It takes time to learn how to interview, how to interact, how to read the interviewer and how to response. I failed few times before I found my current job.

    @SmartCPA, Also, I had to change my name in order to get more interviews because my name would make the employers think that I cannot work in the US without a sponsorship. You should take a look your resume to see if you need any change. Maybe try to go to a career center at your university.

    Just wanted to caution – you can only do this if you're recognized as a CPA in the eyes of the state, aka you've got a license number. Passing the exams isn't sufficient. Some states have a “certification” short of “license” or a license level that doesn't require experience, but to my knowledge California doesn't have any such thing, and the OP didn't mention (at least that I caught) having prior qualifying experience, so for anyone who doesn't have the experience to have the license and therefore doesn't have an assigned license number, don't put those “CPA” letters next to your name yet. Put in your LinkedIn Summary that you've passed the CPA exams, meet the educational requirements, and are seeking an opportunity to obtain the experience, so that they know you're almost there, but don't put it next to your name yet.

    Yes, @Lilla is right. I tried to help OP by putting myself on his shoes, and I totally forgot about the experience requirement.

    Please don't believe everything you read on the internet. It's completely untrue that recruiters/agencies are only for temp to hire or contract work. Many businesses simply outsource their hiring and screening. I got my current position through an agency but I was very clear with my wish list and requirements. I was a regular hire from day 1, but my employer paid a fee that was a percentage of my first year salary to the agency that “matched” us.

    I moved out of california to avoid that issue. I moved to another state and I must tell you, the number of people with college degrees here is no where compared to California. The cost of living is also very low, do yourself a favor and leave OC, LA, riverside, etc. There's a lot of opportunities in other states where you can commute within minutes from the suburbs to larger cities. I make the equivalent of someone making 90K a year in Anaheim because the cost of living is so low where I live. Get out there and explore, especially in the early years after your graduation, you will have a hard time trying to convince management to hire you if you haven't worked in your field for the last 3 years.
