    Hi all,

It’s almost summer time and people are starting to take days off. I just got curious and want to know how many PTO days you get in public vs private.

I know it would vary depending on the place and how long you’ve been working…but mostly interested in days for people with 1 and 2 years of experience.

It’s 15 days reasonable for first years in public/Big 4? What about in industry?

    Thanks!

I work at a top 6 public accounting firm in Auditing. I received about 17-18 days my first year, 15 seems a little low to be honest. Industry is usually a little lower than big 4.

I work at a public accounting firm on the East Coast, top 25.

I got 20 PTO days per year as a staff and now 23 PTO days per year as a senior.

From what I have heard, private accounting has less PTO days compared to public.

20 days PTO here, working at a smaller public accounting firm.

When I first started in public at PWC in 2006 it was 2 weeks PTO for associates. Seniors and managers were at 3 weeks PTO.

Not sure what has changed at Big 4 since then as I left in 2009. 3 weeks seems pretty standard nowadays tho.

I want to share my experience about PTO in the non accounting sector for private, and public service organizations.

Private companies I have worked at minimum give 3 weeks PTO from year 1 to 5 this breaks down to (general low level office positions):

    5 holidays (company chosen)
    5 sick days
    5 vacation days

Public Service (Private Arts College) — Position in business office 1st year:

    14 holidays
    10 Vacation Days
    5 Sick days
8 Fridays off during Summer (This was an as announced by President PTO not guaranteed)

I also dated someone that worked (in an office position) for a not for profit that was a segment of a public university for about 6 years. He too was given more than adequate time off.

The public service sector tries to keep the amount of PTO that is given out a secret. Probably because it is not evenly distributed and it would cause more of an uproar in the political arena if people really knew.

As for public companies I worked for one for 2 years and they provided the same amount of PTO as the private companies I was employed with.

I'm in my second year and get 13.5 days of PTO a year – will be increased to 18.5 once I get my CPA done. However, my firm lets us either get paid out for the OT hours we work during tax season, or take all those hours as PTO in the off season. I took all mine as PTO so that gets me all the way up to 47.5 days of PTO.

    Thanks for the input all!

It looks comparable (kind of) to me at least in the first two years. I see mostly 15 days (3 weeks) in industry/private vs. 18-20ish in public.

I also tried googling this and although most posts are 2-3 years old, I found some interesting stuff. Deloitte maternity leave and Grant Thorntos FTO. Any thoughts on the last?

I work for a Quasi-gov't authority. Get 14 hours a month, so 21 days not including memorial day, 4th of july, labor day, thanksgiving, Christmas, and new years.

I also get 6 floating holidays, use it or lose 3 of them every 6 months.

So that's 33 days a year, but I'm still always at work WTF 🙁

15 days PTO per year; scales up to 18 after 5 years of service, and 21 after 10 years.
    12 holidays
Any work over 40 hours results in comp. time for additional time off. Through busy season I accumulated 8 days from comp time.
