    Ok here’s my story

    I received an offer from the Big4, but I have a problem. I graduated in January of 2014 (with 127 credits) so I did a tax season at a small local firm then that fall passed 2 parts of the CPA. 2015 tax season I did at the same firm and passed 2 parts. Then I went to another small did a tax season and obtained the rest of my credits. Stayed at the small firm for this tax season, but now I received an offer from a Big4 firm.

    Here is the dilemma, in May of 2014 I caught a DUI (DWAI in NY), which is only a (major) traffic violation not a misdemeanor. Will this jeopardize my chance of employment? Do I have to disclose this? Is it don’t ask so don’t tell? I want to be transparent as possible as this is very important to me as it is rare coming from a small firm to receive an offer plus I am in my early 30’s already.

    Anyone with any knowledge and experience in this I would really like some insight.

    Thank you I greatly appreciate anyone and everyone’s help in this matter

    I had the same infraction in the state of NY as you, along with the Big 4 offer. Since it is not a misdemeanor or felony I chose not to disclose it. They never asked any questions about it and I was able to accept my offer without any issues at all.

    thats crazy that a DUI isnt a misdemeanor, but if thats the way the law works in NY then no need to disclose it.

    I disclosed my misdemeanor for misuse of a state license (used a fake ID in college and got caught) back when I was being recruited, and the recruiter at PWC just laughed at me when I disclosed it and said she's heard MUCH much worse.

    NY still has a criminal DUI charge. OP stated he was charged with a DWAI which is a less severe charge in NY and only a traffic infraction.

    Thank you both for answering. I'm hoping this does not effect my chances.

    My background check explicitly stated disclose if you received a DUI,DWI, underage drinking, etc … So I did.

    @tpz33

    I'm quite sure NY does not have a DUI, its DWAI is it's DUI. But a DWI is a misdemeanor offense.

    Here's a link explaining it
