    Hey guys,

Some people say FAR is a mile wide and an inch deep meaning if you get the basics across the 60+ concepts you should be good. But I’ve heard horror stories about the sims though. How many of you think you did awful on the sims (like 1or2 right) and still passed? i feel like ill be good to know the concepts for MCQ but the sims will just make my mind go blank especially with the overwhelming exhibits to go through. i wont know where to start

    practice, practice and more practice.
if you understand the concepts behind the MCQs and can score well on those, the next step is to apply those concepts to the SIMs.
If you invested the time and understand the concepts you will do okay.
Don't forget to check out the AICPA sample exams. Priceless experience to get your feet wet with those.

I think Recked gave you a great answer, and his signature ballbarks how much work/time it will take. I shot for 2000 mcq's on FAR. Definitely practice sims and be prepared to feel like you didn't do that well on them. I thought I bombed the sims on FAR and REG and passed anyway.

on all exams I have taken, I have been stronger on Sims than on MCQs. Perhaps I have been lucky with the Sims I have received, but they have been my savior. I would not approach studying thinking it is a mile wide and an inch deep. You should think of it as a mile wide and a mile deep in the context of your study material. Its like these tests know your weaknesses and they will exploit them. Skim over one area and murphy's law guarantees that there will be a greater than average percentage of that type of question on the exam. It happened to me for my first FAR failure. Government and non-profit seemed to be every other question on the exam, and I had chosen to skim that section because its such as small part of the exam.

@JRG24- I have a couple of questions for you. How did you become good with the sims? Why do you think that everyone seems to have a problem with them? Something else I want to know is why don't a lot of people take a long time to study for these exams? Are there stats that show that studying 4 to 5 months is not the right way to go? From what you say, it's important to not underestimate anything and I totally agree.

As for the shorter study window, it's really more about retention. If you drag out studying for 4 or 5 months it really means you have to remember what you studied on day one longer. I do believe a shorter time frame with more intense study windows is best, i think if your goal was long term retention was your goal expanding the study window would be best, but in this case the data is a one time use (the exam). I am not aware of any official stats on the subject.

As for the sims, I guess it's something about partial credit. Also, I dont think you have to rely 100% just on what you study. Drawing a few T accounts out can lead you to an answer and in the Sums I feel like you habe the time to do that unlike kn the MCQ. I think the research question is a gimmie. You can search the authorative literature like google. Practice keyword searches and that one is a guaranteed pass. DRS problems I think are a blessing as well. People kind of freak out about them but I find these seem to be problems less about tripping you up which means it should be easier to deduce the answer. I wonder if people get so wound up about the exam they expect everything to be harder than it is so therefore it is. I'm not saying it's easy, and every exam is different, but I think Sims are a real chance to shine.

For example, I am awaiting my BEC score now. I am positive i got 3 of the sims 100% correct, but I am also positive that I completely bombed the fourth (it was just a tough question. It happens sometimes) so, my thought for this exam is if the sim I bombed was the pretest one, I will pass. But if it isn't, I probably failed because I probably did not do as well on the MCQs. I've never perceived an increase of hardness on the mcq testlets as some people mention. I'm not sure if that's because I really dont do well on them or if it's because I don't consider any one type of question harder than the next while taking the exam. They all seem hard to me.

I honestly believe it is a mile wide and inch deep. I took FAR twice, and I saw a ton of repeat subjects on both. Probably 75% of the second exam was the same topics from the first exam. On my second exam I had 3 sims that were the exact same question but they asked how it applied to 3 types of statements (don't want to get too specific). I crammed so much for the first exam and then on the second I focused on 5-6 big topics and passed.

A factor in FAR is how long ago you were in school, how well you did, and how vigorous the program was. I took 4.5 months, but mostly because I had issues getting my NTS. Just keep up with progress tests and get through the material. I didn’t schedule my test until I got through to the Becker Final Review. I scheduled two weeks out, did the Becker final review and mock exams, and passed. Good Luck!

FAR is deeper than that. You could say that REG is a mile wide and an inch deep though.

I think it’s something like that. I needed to retain so much for this one. The volume was tremendous.
