REG Yaeger HomeStudy Course Reviews?

Let me just say that I used Yaeger for FAR and AUD and am still awaiting results for those two tests, but Iā€™m very happy with their HomeStudy courses. Phil and Cindy both did an excellent job with the FAR material and I was very happy with the way Gary taught AUD. But now, Iā€™m watching Phil on the REG HomeStudy videos and Iā€™m almost finished, but I must say, heā€™s terrible. 80% of the time, heā€™s basically just reading from the book and handouts. He was ok on some of the tax stuff, but now Iā€™m watching the Law videos and heā€™s just reading his handouts word for word with little to no elaboration. He does mention in his videos that people complain about this, but he makes an excuse that he has to read something to us. Thatā€™s not particularly true because he can explain the topics in his own words without having to read so much. Gary Bulmash is a great example of a good instructor that can teach without reading too much. Yes, heā€™s not the most exciting instructor, but he doesnā€™t read from the textbook word for word. He explains everything in his own words. If anything, he may read just a sentence or two, but most of the time, heā€™s explaining things in his own words. But with Phil, all he does is read word for word from the book. Sometimes, heā€™ll elaborate after he reads, but other times, heā€™ll just read and say ā€œPlease remember thatā€ and thatā€™s it! No elaboration. Not to mention that he really moves through the material at a ridiculously fast pace, which really doesnā€™t give your brain enough time to absorb all the content.

Please keep in mind that I like Yaeger a lot. Theyā€™re the main reasons why I felt more prepared than ever when taking the FAR and AUD exam. But REG is just a major disappointment.

So, is it just me that feels this way?

Don't get me wrong. Phil seems like a nice guy. But I just thought he read too much from the book. If he organized his lectures better and gathered up his thoughts beforehand, I think his lectures would have turned out much better. There really is no point in reading that much. If anything, just read a few key sentences here and there, but he literally reads page after page at times.

Again, I apologize to Phil if he's reading this, but I'm just curious if it's just me that feels this way.

I can see what you mean, but I don't find it to be a big deal. I think he elaborates when he needs to. The Business Law is pretty cut and dry.

Yaeger is great, scored an 88 on the part of cpa exam I feared most.

I just began using Yaeger for REG this week…I haven't reached the business law part yet. I used Becker for BEC and I am happy so far with the change-up I made. One thing that concerns me is how he skips over some of the material, and says to stick to his outline. I'm doing all the MCQ's to make sure I am a least familiar with the parts he skips over. I read through the explanation on each of them, and then go back to the section in the text and read it once or twice.

For me, I don't mind that he is just reading from the book a lot of the time. My learning style needs structure, and he gives me this by going through a few pages for each lecture. When I attempt to read material on my own I often space off and have to go back and read it again, and again, and again. I find myself doing this a lot less with Yaeger. I passed BEC with Becker by hardly reading any of the text, I just watched lectures, did passmaster, and alot of MCQ's.

I do see what you mean about wanting him to elaborate a little more and use his own examples. Although, he has done this a couple of times from what I've seen in the tax lectures Really it just boils down to me understanding a topic, and so far I've been able to so with his approach. I honestly don't think I'll ever call him…I'm wondering what percentage of people that do buy Yaeger actually do this, I'd guess it's less than 5%. But, if I do get hung up on something it's nice to know I can.

I'm highlighting any material he covers (reads) and then take notes in the margins of the text (I wish there was more room in the Wiley margins!). If he doesn't read/cover something I don't highlight it. This helps me differentiate what he does and doesn't go over. I'm also alternating highlight colors between the different lectures and marking where each lecture # starts and stops. This way I'm able to find the material easier when going through the MCQ's. I also note which MCQ's he goes over to focus my attention a little more on these, and which lecture # it falls into.

It's geared to my particular learning style…like I said I need the structure. I have found myself wanting to fast forward some areas that I understand, and its kind of hard to do so. Doing that with Becker was a lot easier, mainly because the parts were broken down in smaller time increments, but it's not really an issue for me.

So far I am very pleased with Yaeger and will probably use it for FAR and AUD. Good luck!

    Tips for success:

If your player allows for it, watch it at 1.3 speed…knocks time off the session.

If they skip it … I recommend skipping it as well. You are trying to pass with a 75, not become an expert on the menutia.

@Jeff- I have the USB thumb drive. So, I watch those FLV videos. Is there an FLV player out there I can download that lets you play at 1.3x speed?

I must say tho, I think Phil runs through the material way too quickly and sometimes, my brain gets confused. I can't imagine watching these at a faster speed, but it's worth a shot.

Honestly, if Yaeger says skip it I would as you are not likely to see many questions on it. I think he did a fine job with preparing me for multiple choice. The problem was the SIMS

Thanks for reiteraing that I shoudn't over do it regarding the info Dr. Yaeger doesn't cover, I think I've accepted this approach. I also have Becker 2010, so I'm watching all the lectures in there after I watch Yaeger, it reinforces everything.

I came across my disc for Wiley that I received back in January when I purcased Yaeger, I didn't even realize it was part of the package. I got it up and running and really like the format. What I like most about it is the practice it gives for the sims. I also checked out the AICPA's practice test for REG and the sims in Wiley seem to be right on.

For those that used the Wiley online practice tests, this pretty much has to prepare you adequately for them, correct? It just comes down to doing enough of them, and knowing the material through the lectures/MCQ's, don't ya think?

I'm early enough into my studying that I'd like to readjust and focus my time spent in the best possible way. If any of you have suggestions, I'm all ears…

@zooyuka- Thanks! Of course, I finished all the lectures about a week and a half ago and am reviewing my notes. I just purchased Jeff's Ninja notes the other day and for the most part, they seem to explain all the main points very well. I think Phil should have notes like these in his lectures and elaborate on them rather than reading from the book. That would've definitely made his lectures a lot better.

Anyways, I have A LOT of notes taken from Phil's lectures, so I'm done with them and won't have to go back to them anymore since EVERYTHING is written in my notes. However, I still have to watch his July updates which I purchased last week. I never got around to watching them yet because I want to master these materials first before worrying about those updates.

I like Yaeger review course and the fact that Phil offers to answer questions on the phone, but I have a problem with the person answering the phone. She is not very professional and very argumentative. That is the drawback.

I am using Yaeger, too. Did you just focused on the MC questions he assigned on the wileybook or is it advisable to do the wiley cd bank MC and sims practice, as well?
