REG for whatever reason seems to be very frustrating I heard. Is this true?

It is, especially if you get a 74 on it. I would say BEC is a little more frustrating than REG though. I can only imagine what is going to happen once simulations are added next year.

    CPA (2017)

    REG:  75

    BEC:  76

    FAR:  77

    AUD: 78

    CMA (2019)

    P1: 380

    P2: 360

    AUD - 1st - 60 (12/12), 61 (2/13), 61 (8/13), 78! (11/15)
    REG - 55 (2/16) 69 (5/16) Retake(8/16)
    BEC - 71(5/16) Retake (9/16)
    FAR - (8/16)

Haha, makes sense. I am hoping we do not need to memorize $ levels and deduction amounts.

considering i'm studying for a retake, it sure feels like it at the moment :). it really depends on the person and the exam though. some material is more interesting to some than others and every exam is different – there's a little luck of the draw!

Yeah I guess. Each material tests the brain a little differently at least.

I am studying for REG too and I feel like it will be impossible for me to pass, I am feeling extremely overwhelmed (I am a little over 3 weeks away from my test).

REG seems like it's all memorization which is easy for me as long as it makes sense. The mechanics of accounting make total, logical sense to me so yes FAR and BEC were difficult but they were also more intuitive to me and you can always try to problem solve your way out on a question if needed. With REG there is so much Tax/Legal jargon to memorize (that I will never use again) and if you dont know Law XYZ or Tax Code 123 in REG, you cant just problem solve your way out, you either know it or you dont!

    Sorry for the rant 🙂

    Good luck to you!

Individual taxation does not make sense, and it is a test of memory. But entities taxation and property transactions should make total sense, and those 2 are the big topics of REG test. If you understand them perfectly and score stronger on those 2, chances for you to score stronger in simulations are very high.

I haven't taken REG yet (Dec 7th is my date) and I think it depends on the person. For me, I saved it for last because I think it will be the easiest section for me. But that is because I love tax + law and I am eager/willing to study and continue learning it. I found BEC to be the most frustrating because the topics are all over the place and it just becomes a mess. I am glad I passed it and never have to see it again.

YES because its more of studying, for me, rather than reviewing. The information is interesting but studying is too time consuming. Im very impatient.

The tax law is political and convoluted so expecting it to make any sense is the wrong way to go about it. I told my friend I wanted them to simplify it but she pointed out then I would be out of a job so…..I guess the fact that you can only build on the law and can't delete any of it just makes it cumbersome.

It's more of a test of memory of weird stuff like exceptions to exceptions, and so forth. I think the most frustrating part for me is when I did individual tax questions I got a lot of questions that had to deal with S corp and partnerships that flow through to individual and I hadn't studied for them yet and I'm not used to doing horrible on quizzes so it can be a bit deflating to the ego.

It is what you make of it though…

I hate REG. This will be my 3rd time taking it and there are so many details and exceptions! I am so ready to pass it!! My nemesis are the simulations. I do fairly well on the questions and then get completely stumped on the SIMS.

REG was frustrating! It's the only test I failed and then failed worse on the second attempt. All of it was tough for me, individual taxation, business law, corporate taxes, partnerships, s-corps, etc. I took 1 tax class in college and I did horrible in it. Business law classes were so long ago I didn't really remember anything except what a contract is. The SIMS are the toughest but if you do enough MCQ and use some of the literature on exam day you will get through it.

if i had to rank each section's difficulty based on my personal experience,

BEC – Hardest for me, too many random topics & i never enjoyed econ. it was never my thing.
FAR – too many things to cover & by the time you think you finally got the hang of financial accounting, they throw Gov't & NFP accounting at you.
AUD – took it after FAR & many concepts overlapped. also it was fun learning about the controls. all the inconvenient authorizations and processes that used to make no sense were now starting to make sense to me. they weren't there to make our lives miserable even if it did. they were there to provide reasonable assurance!
REG – relatively easier than other sections in my opinion. compared to other sections, i thought this section was more “specialized” if that makes any sense. if you can work thru an individual, corporate, p/s tax returns, you will be fine. 🙂
