It's so hard

I think I’m about to cry because I don’t know what is the right way to study for REG. I am pulling 68-73 in NINJA and I’m about 19 days away from my test. I don’t want to move it, because I’d rather take it now and retake it next quarter (in the event that I don’t pass). Even then, I DON’T want to take it next year AT ALL.

This is my last test and I’m trying really hard to summon the will to study. I realize that I have to buckle up, but Roger’s software does not cover a lot of the details that NINJA tests me on. SIMs, I’m not too worried, I’m on track to finish all the SIMs in Roger and NINJA. Even when I get it wrong, I know I can take notes and improve on those. I plan to redo all the wrong SIMs once I finish. But MCQ has me so worried. I keep getting them wrong…

These next days, I am able to study at WORK and after work, and I’m willing to put in the time to just CRANK this out so I never have to touch this book again. Can someone please give me some tips? How do I get over this hump? Should I do more questions (but then I’ll finish all the tax questions in NINJA)? Should I take notes more? I’ve been LITERALLY rewriting each tax chapter every single week to make sure that my memory’s fresh, and I have about 6 chapters left of BLaw, which I’ll finish by this week. What should I do? Sighs.

Hasy – at this point I would recommend you hammer away mcqs. I think you wrote enough notes already. I printed troubled and important mcqs for each section and went through the stack full of questions 4-5 times. Having questions printed in your hand to review might help you engage questions better than looking at questions on a screen. As you go through printed questions try to identify its importance and ranked them by its difficulty so you can put the hardest on top and easiest question on bottom. Try it. I passed all my sections using this method. I pray that same will happen tonight as well.

This will be my first time taking REG but my advice is simple:
    1. Calm down and think positive don't be so frustrated by your results
    2. DO NOT rewrite the notes without putting them in your own words or creating examples from your own work and life experiences that help you remember
    3. Do 100 MCQs on your weakest areas open note to build some confidence

You are right there visualize focus and execute!

I'm right there with you hasy. I feel like I'm in the same position as you except that my exam is this Saturday! I'm taking off this week to study, but still have a ton of material to review. Hoping to be done with all tax stuff by tomorrow or Wednesday.

On top of that my son has been sick all week and is barely sleeping and keeping me up all hours of the night. I broke out in a rash all over my arms and legs, which I think is from stress because I haven't eaten anything different the last few days. I'm trying to do everything I can to be prepared for REG, but it feels like all the cards are stacked against me.

We just have to keep on pushing forward and see the light at the end of the tunnel!!

REG was my last Section to pass too. When I run a race, the last mile seems the longest and hardest. But once I finish the race, I couldn't feel better. You are almost there. I used Roger for basic understanding and pounded out Ninja MCQs for my retake (4-5 hours a day for 4 weeks). You can do this!

    Thanks everyone!

At the moment, 5 days out to the test. Going over Estates and Bankruptcy today and Property Transactions tmw as a final review. I've been sprinkling BLaw studies from audio to reading random chapters. How does everyone recommend reviewing for the last week? I genuinely hope this is the last time EVER, that I have to enter a prometric center.

Note: I've finish all the NINJA and Roger's SIMs. I've actually gone back and have redone all the NINJA sims that I've scored less than a 75 on as well. Surprisingly, 74 SIMs wasn't that bad to get through. I wonder if the SIMs in the test are harder because I heard it was. Hope this effort was futile.

Just keep crushing MCQs and TBS. TBS were pretty difficult for me on my REG section this weekend but I think I just didn't put in enough focus on those. So I think you have a big advantage right off the bat being comfortable with SIMS.

I had the same problem as you. I used wiley and averaged 68% on the MCQ's and did almost all of the available ones. Every quiz I took I either got an 80% or a 30%. It was extremely frustrating. I took the exam last week and find out on the 8th if I passed. If I did, I'm done with all of the tests.

REG was definitely the section that I had the hardest time with because it was the least conceptual and the most “have to memorize infinite variations” minutia. I HATE memorizing things when the memorization serves no purpose (in the real world, you'd have software and forms). To me it all seemed so stupid…which made it harder to care, which made it harder to study.

I got through by taking copious notes and by organizing different, but similar, concepts on excel sheets highlighting the processes/differences. On exam day I found myself floundering for whether some things were in which parts of a form, exacerbated by multiple exam crashes that heightened my anxiety. I got enough right to get through.

I guess as far as the frustration…you're on the finishing leg. It would be uber-stupid to have wasted so much effort without finishing, so it's not like you have a choice. And keep remembering this is why they are going to pay us…and why we'll have job security; it's hard and not that many people can, or will, finish.

@Hasy – I understand your frustration and anxiety. I trended a 65 on Ninja MCQ and passed Reg, so it is possible. Keep plugging away, you can do it!

Definitely hammer mcqs on your weakest areas (according to the score report). Also, focus heavily on cranking mcqs for tax. Know the difference between individuals partnership s Corp and c corp tax. Continue to review ethics. Also b law secondary to ethics. But focus mcq mainly on tax and just review notes for b law and ethics. Good luck you got this!

I've finished all the tax MCQs in NINJA and even if I redo the questions, well the sessions I do are high (above 90). Today is the last day of reviewing the tax chapters, I have redone all the wrong questions from all the tax sections. I'm slowly working on business law. I'll do more questions after work. At the moment, my score is 77/84, however, I can't help but feel it might be skewed since I only did sessions of all the questions I got wrong previously. Also, I've finished all the tax SIMs in NINJA and redid any sims that I score below a 75. Roger's SIMs, I've done them all and I have redone a good portion of ones that I got wrong previously. Sighs….4 more days.

I'm honestly more worried about curveballs and I just really want to pass because I cannot keep studying for this test at work or anywhere else.

First…most test takers prepare the same way…so curve balls are nailing everyone and there is SOME curve to the test. Second, many curve balls are experimental questions that won't count. Third…you have three done, so whatever it takes to complete REG, you have to do. End of story…you're too close not to.

So…relax. You're going to get curve balls. Period. You don't know if, or how much, they are penalizing you. Don't let curve balls break focus or cause panic. You've prepared hard.

Execute. If you miss, you'll try to add another prep element.

Hasy, I am right there with ya. FAR could potentially be my last.. and it is super hard. I am not doing well at all on these hw in becker and the SIMS takes forever. I just dont know if I could pass (exam on jan 16).

For REG, I would say really hit all SIMS on Ninja that really helped me tremendously and I was not disappointed.Good Luck this weekend!

You are super close to being done it looks like…I agree though. The endless hoops that one must jump through to pass this monster of 4 exams is patently ridiculous. C'mon, it's a CPA, not an MD or DDS or JD or even PhD. I was contemplating doing REG next (after FAR) because I am too unfamiliar with a lot of what is in BEC, which was the one I'd planned on doing after FAR. I'm as tossed up about this whole thing as you are….in a different way though. You mentioned that you are using Roger as well as Ninja…Roger is supposed to be the best one out there nowadays and yet it seems there are things he does not cover or cover well. I've seen that in his FAR program a bit. Not everything gets a complete explanation. What to do, what to do…….?
