Today, I made my third attempt at REG. I came into this exam, basically knowing every topic, but there was one question about partnership basis that I know I got wrong.

My testlets went from medium to difficult and to difficult. Normally that means the person did well, but I don’t know. If I get a 74, I’ll know it was because of that basis question I got wrong.

The sims for the most part, were really easy. One of the sims was the same sim from my second stab at REG back in June. I was so excited, because I studied for it, and got the same sim again. That was amazing. However, I had to guess on the research question. I hope bombing on the research question doesn’t mean an automatic 74.

I really need to pass this time around. This was my seventh exam, and I’m tired of listing to Jeff and Roger. My three-year-old son knows Jeff and Roger. I love them for their prep courses, but I’m ready to be done.

Has anyone ever bombed the research question and still passed, or know you screwed up on partnership basis, and still passed?

I am taking REG for the first time on Tuesday…I am not feeling very confident and very overwhelmed with the material (more so than any of the other sections)! Any tips or expert advice you have?

You really lucked out getting the same SIM! How did you feel about the DRS? I haven't seen one of these yet and I'm a little intimidated.

No DRS on my exam. Praise God! According to the AICPA website, some exams won't have any DRS questions until April 2017. I didn't feel like doing any DRS either, so I'm really glad none of them popped up.

I also recently completed my third attempt at REG, and my experience paralleled the OP's. (Interestingly enough, my exam scores parallel his/hers as well).

My first testlet was obviously medium, but testlet #2 was so clearly a spike in difficulty, I almost chuckled in the exam room. My third testlet was similarly rough. Judging from my experiences with the exams, it seems to be better to get stuck in the tougher testlets even if you get a greater proportion wrong, as compared to getting stuck in medium testlets getting a greater proportion of the questions correct. Anyway, for the MCQs, I think I did well enough, though, of course, I had a few exam-day “how-the-hell-did-I-forget-that?” moments.

As for the sims, well, they were fairly reasonable. I found my research question without much trouble, two of the others I felt like I knew inside out (I'm hoping for 100% on both), my DRS wasn't ridiculous, and the two other sims were rough, but I may have been able to average a 50 between the two, which is good.

I think I did well enough to pass. I got 74 in April, then 73 in September, so here's to hoping that the third time's the charm for both of us. It'll be lovely to return to the civilized world.

It sounds like you did killer. I'm sure you will pass and finally be done. Taking my 3rd REG attempt next weekend, I feel you. Basis questions always kick my butt too, but I'm sure you did it this time! Here is to ultimate success on REG in Q4.

@OnmywaytoCPA did you practice SIMS before taking any of your three attempts? I have CPA Excel and Ninja SIMS but haven't spent a whole lot of time on them as I have been trying to master the material and crunch multiple choice questions. I am concerned that I may not be spending enough time on them.

    I HAVE a life now.

    sounds like you did great!
definitely study the SIMs! If you have time, actually do them…it really tests how well you know topics and give you a big picture view of others. Some you can just read through the answers to for purposes of time but being confident answering the ones provided are key. if you do the practice exam on the AICPA website they have a practice DRS now and it's pretty gross…

Thank you everyone for the encouragement! Hopefully, we all passed REG this window, and we'll be celebrating on November 4 when the scores are released! @Finding DeMo, I didn't study the sims for any of the exams but after I failed REG the second time, I did a few when I had time, here and there. The sim that I got on the second REG exam in June, I knew I bombed it. After I got the failing score, I decided to study the subject matter that was covered in that sim. I learned it like the back of my hand. When I got the same sim on Saturday, it take me about 5 minutes to finish. Actually, I was done with everything except for the research question with about 40 minutes to spare, and I still could not find the topic for the research sim. I ended up throwing something in there during the last 2 minutes. So, now that I think about it, you should do some practice sims similar to the research questions.
