Some of you have already read my story “Stressful Job Environment” and here is an update. Today when I came to the office, I received a very nasty phone call from the CEO. The other managing partner have spoke to him and have lied about me not doing my work (where I always send emails confirm that everything I have done). Indeed, the CEO disrespected me by screaming, using offensive language and not giving the opportunity to defend myself. Plus he also didn’t like that I told him that I was not going to accept that type of behavior and that I am going to leave the company because of that and because of the fishy stuff I have figured out. So, hung up and left. I’m just here at my house thinking what to do next and starting to write a formal resignation letter. I have some proof of some of the fishy stuff, but I don’t have enough to make a case. I didn’t have the time to gather all the information. However, that’s not my main priority right now. I have a son, my grandparents, whom are sick , and a lot of bills to pay. I need to start looking for a job, but right now I don’t feel good.

You need to just tell the CEO your findings, and hand him your resignation letter. Only put in the resignation letter that you are resigning for personal reasons. Do not write down all the dirt.

Hand the resignation letter directly to the CEO, and explain your view of the fishy stuff. I would also suggest offering to work the 2 weeks for proper notice as a courtesy, and to not kill your chances with getting a new job.

I agree with the points sans made above. I'd probably also try reaching out to some recruiters asap so that they can help place you more quickly. I'm so sorry to hear that you had to go through all this. I think you made the best decision you could and no one should ever have to put up with that kind of behavior. Wishing you the best!

Not sure of the background (didn't read your last post) but they might have already terminated you. Most companies, if you say you are going to quit and leave with no other word to anybody, they just assume you walked a and terminate you. I would go back very soon, today if possible, with your resignation letter offering two weeks. They don't have to pay you out if they want you to leave but most employers will at least give you a week at the min. Don't mention the dirt, but do follow up with the appropriate government bodies if you really think they are doing something odd. After that, update your resume and get in touch with three recruiters by the end of the week. it might take a few weeks to even get a temp thing but so be it. Your ex-CEO was abusive those people are horrible. Good luck

You don't quit until they terminate you. Just because, it is tough finding another job, and difficult to explain “why you quit”. Start putting your resume together… It is just a matter of time that they could terminate you based on what has happened. Start meeting some search firms/recruiting agencies, and start letting them know what you are looking for. Don't tell them what exactly happened because, there is a possibility that they can tell the recruiting manager from the hiring company what happened – I think you can just say something like – this wasn't a good fit for me, and am looking for change in scenery from public to industry or something along those lines.

I have also been terminated from my employer due to work performance reason(s), and still having tough time finding job now. Hang in there, and just move forward. Good luck!

I've read your situation, and I understand. Congratulations. Look for a new job hopefully with a larger company with an hr department. I understand it is stressful, but I think this is for the best. You can't compromise your ethics.

I'd get that resignation letter out ASAP, ignore the fact that you're not feeling well right now and buckle down on getting as many resumes out as humanly possible. I wouldn't mention to anybody what you feel is fishy there because as you said you don't have proof of wrongdoing only assumptions you've made of the meaning of facts you've become aware of.

There is no need for a manager to speak to anyone using offensive language. Just move on and don't even add this employer to your resume since you were only there a very short time.

Letters of Resignation doesn't mean much if they don't accept it and terminate you immediately.

I would rather just start looking for another job and not even bother with it.

Chances are if they wanted to screw you over, they will do it or find a way to do it no matter what.

I just went back and handed my resignation letter. I was asked to reconsider, but I explained that my decision was final. In the mean time, I received two phone calls from recruiting companies, and I haven't even started looking for jobs. So I guess that's a sign.

Just out of curiosity, if you were unable to collect unemployment (in some cases but not all you actually can collect even if you quit) and unemployed for a few months would you be ok with that? I don't at all blame you for wanting to get out of there but want to make sure you've considered all of the possible ramifications of making what had to be a very difficult decision.

One more note: some recruiters are just plain full of it so I wouldn't count on the fact that you have heard from 2. They could just be sniffing you out. Work on your resume and as somebody noted earlier, start sending those suckers out to anybody in finance/accounting who will read it. You don't want to appear desperate but you kind of are. So desperately search without looking like you are….

@mla1169 I read on my state's Department of Unemployment that I can collect unemployment for hostile work environment. I'm actually considering taking unemployment and study full time (8 hours at day) and pass all the exams, but I need to make sure that the money I get would be sufficient to help my husband with all the bills. My husband is encouraging me to take this route, but I don't want to leave all the finances to him because we're very tight with money right now.

Just think overnight and consider all possibilities. If collecting unemployment is the only way to stay afloat, be prepared that your claim might be denied. I only say this because I've seen friends who didn't make a plan b. Your state may have very specific criteria for what constitutes a hostile work environment. It is an unfortunate situation. What I would do is to take some time off, study for the exams (what a great support from the hubby) and once done with cpa – apply for another job with my head clear. I feel that having all that pressure and bad feelings with the previous employer, there will be a temptation to take the first offer available ( not necessarily the best). If you have the ability to take some time off, I'll do exactly that. The fact that you were off but still used it to get such a nice credential as cpa will allow you to say that the reasons to leave the previous employer was personal reasons combined with the decision to pursue cpa. Hang in there, it'll work out.

Hi everyone,

Today, I feel a little bit better and back to the MCQs. I took the last two days off from everything to clear my mind. I have decided to apply for unemployment and if I don't get approved, I will do taxes as a part time. I will study for my tests and after I'm done with all of them, I will start looking for a good job. This time, I will take the time to do my research and choose the right company. I will not settle for the first or the most appealing offer without doing an extensive research.

I do appreciate all the support all of you have given me. Without my husband and you guys, I think I will still be in bed crying nonstop.
