    Hello everyone,

Studying for the CPA exam is an all intensive experience and often times you have to sacrifice time spent with your friends and family to be able to focus on yourself in order to stay committed.

Has anyone else who is currently studying or has previously studied for their CPA exams experienced this lack of understanding from your friends on family on what you are doing and how did/do you deal with it?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Alex,

It is common and sometimes it just doesn't work out. You can never convenience everyone and frankly speaking you can't control what they think.

If you think your friends and family are simply mad because they don't understand what you are going through, then why don't you invite them to your studies, or your work field. Invite them over and play some accounting games, share some questions (the math ones) and see if they can answer? If you have friends who are also studying, even if it is a different field, study together. Also, talk to your friends and family about your career situation, talk it out so they can now see that it is important to take the test for job advancement. (I think everyone agreed that money and job advancement is important, right?) I showed my parents how much I earn now, and how much I will earn later. I also told them getting a better ranking will make me easier to find a boyfriend / girlfriend, etc.

Lastly, I must say, you need to learn time management. Yes, you must study hard, but you must also allow your friends and family a time slot to hang out with you. It can be 5 pm to 8 pm, or one day a week. Make this clear to them so they know when they can approach you, and you must work hard to make that time frame and keep your promise. When you hang out, don't keep mentioning you need to study, PLAY and RELAX.

If none of those works, maybe it's not a very good friend. A true friend will help you regardless (or try their best).

    STAY STRONG.

Worrying about stuff like that steals your focus. Don't let it. Also understand that you need to spend some time with people throughout this process. There is no reason to shut everyone out completely so that you can study every spare second.

Focus on Exam. They should understand you are studying for a very important exam that will benefit your career and help your earn $$ in the long run. You wont be able to attend every event but obviously if its important make time. At the end of the day you have to do what best for you and help you get $$$ to be stable in the future. If they cant understand that, you don't need them in your circle, you cant please everyone.

    – I lost contact with most people for a year. And I lost some friends, you know those people I used to hang out for fun only. And friendship is not only about having fun together. I don't regret losing them.

    – I never lost any close friends and close families. We didn't really hang out during the period when I focused on studying for the exam, but my close friends and families always check in with me once a while to see how am I doing. And it is quick to catch up with them after I'm done with the exams. So depends on how you think about it. For me, it's a great way to realize who are the most important people in my life.

    – I made new friends too. I have a small study group for the CPA exam and after 6 months of studying, we are close friends now.
