I’m trying to determine which CPA prep to sign up for.

I really like the idea of live classes to give structure. However, I’ve heard becker live classes are ‘inconsistent’ and that sometimes the instructor is just hitting play on a DVD.

Do any other vendors provide live classes?

Has anyone taken live classes via Becker and can provide feedback on their experiences?

I signed up for Becker Live but hadn't started yet. I heard the same thing about some of the classes being not so great with the video lectures etc. I called Becker helpline and asked them if they can tel me more about the classes in my location, they said that classes in Rancho Cordova (CA) are not hybrid (no video playing). I also asked about the teachers (I was going to google some opinions) but they were not able to provide me with this info. I suggest calling Becker and maybe they will be able to answer your questions.

I went to a single live Becker lecture and decided it was a total waste of my time. You might get more out of it than I did but the lectures online are much better and the instructors are much more engaging. Hitting “play” on a DVD player would have actually been better.

i live in boston area – the live classes woudl be at bentley which has a good acct program. + becker seems to allow access to online courses if you signup for live, so even if live professor sucked id still have the online professors as backup.

Good point-you do get full access to the self study either way, so you might as well check it out. I did live + I would listen to the becker lectures anytime I was in the car, walking the dogs, etc. Just listening without the book is not super effective (there is a lot of “underline this, highlight that”), but there were corny things they'd say that would stick, or I'd hear them explain something differently and would make a mental note to circle back and watch that lecture more intentionally.

Agree! I would not have passed if it weren't for Liliana Hickman-Riggs! I owe it all to her! If you can get to her final review classes at the very least it can be a tremendous help.

It's all dependent on the instructor you get. There was one instructor I had, who was a cpa and an attorney, who was absolutely horrible. He would literally read to you and that was it. Sitting through this was a complete waste of time. On the other hand, I had an instructor for gov't/nfp who took the time to prepare his own notes and handouts which crystallized the material. The benefit of sitting through his lecture was immense.

This may be a crazy question, but how do you register for a Becker live class? I have found the schedule, but can't for the life of me figure out how to register to attend the class!

I also have the same question as Jennifer. I emailed Becker (through Customer Support) and they said it's done through Customer Support (?). Does anyone know how to register online? I only see the schedule/timings/location but no registration.
