My AUD exam questions HARD ones were impossible

Hi everyone. Took my exam last week. I finished it very frustrated and despondent. My questions went medium-hard-medium/hard. I actually thought I messed up because my 2nd testlet upon scanning, were pretty short questions and answers, so I assumed it was easy. POW, I start reading them and they are impossible.

Basically, I was trending 81% on Ninja and familiar with all the topics. But I felt that even if I trended 90% and had a photographic memory, I would not be able to answer my 2nd testlet because many had such particular situations that I could never know the answer to. I flagged 19 of them, meaning I was only confident on 11, while the rest were educated guesses. Seriously, the AICPA hard questions were nowhere as difficult as this.

So, I am assuming I failed. And I need to know how to pass this damn test. What other materials should I get b/c Ninja MCQ and the review is not preparing me enough. Should I try and buy someone’s Becker 2016 AUD prep materials?

Keep in mind that some of those questions could have been pretest. If you feel like you knew the material very well and still had trouble with many questions, then other people taking the exam probably had trouble with them as well. How were your sims? Do you feel they were the same difficulty as the mcq?

I took my test last week, and I agree, many of the MCQs were really out there. Don't sweat it, I was very prepared, and I thought it was very difficult as well. Only have be better then the top 40%!

@Re2pect pretest? also, i thought the sims were okay. not easy, but okay. not sure how i did. the 2nd testlet “hard” mcqs just felt like they skipped over general knowledge and went straight to very specific situations. i've taken it 3x already and this set was just ridiculous. i just had an awful feeling like… “how am i supposed to pass this test either today or next time???”

@BHARP33 good to hear i am not suffering alone! i felt awful about FAR before getting an 85, so hopefully this may work out the same… for the both of us 🙂

Rivens- 15 of the 90 questions on AUD are pretest, which means they don't count towards you're score. They are new questions the AICPA is testing out to see if they should be used on future exams. It's possible that some of the questions you had trouble with won't actually count towards your score.

RE2PECT..from my understanding, very little. it is UP TO 15 questions. not all exams include 15 Pretest questions..maybe more, maybe less….correct me if Im wrong

    REG - 87
    Finally over.

    I had the same experience
First testlet hard/medium, second one hmmm I do not know tricky questions but from standards so might be medium/little hard/ third one hard/medium
Smiluations I do not know what I did, two smiluations are beast 🙁
    Others were managable
Do you think I gonna pass ?

wow, that's a bit disturbing to hear that other people felt the same way. i just don't understand how asking so many very specific and situational questions and having test takers struggle even when they studied the material well … i don't understand how it can be considered a well designed test.

if i pass, i'll rejoice, but i'll still be bitter at the test. if i fail, i'm going to find a beckers v1.2 guide on ebay, study it, and hope AUD doesn't throw so many curve balls next time.

    @Rivens

I hate to say it, but I had Becker V1.2 and a lot of those topic never showed up, at least not in the capacity on the exam. I was breezing through the MCQ's in becker before the exam, and scored well on both practice tests, so I have to believe that I will be in the top 40%. That's all were aiming for!

I've just convinced myself that the bulk of those were pretest questions. 🙂

I had my AUD retake last Friday and my second testlet had a bunch of questions asking things I never even heard of. I used Roger for both attempts and read the Ninja book for the retake. I think the sims got me again and I have no idea how else I can prepare for them. They were like nothing I had practiced and the instructions on how they want you to answer them are terrible. I knew what was being asked, but kept second guessing how to answer them because the instructions were very unclear. Hopefully I did just enough to pass, but won't be surprised if I did worse than my 73 on the first one.

@BHARP33 oh, is that so? in that case, my next plan of action will be to … binge drink and sulk.

@RE2PECT the sims are a bit tricky b/c they really thrusted us into using practical application of audit concepts vs testing our knowledge of the topics, which is hard when you don't work as an auditor. and i didn't really enjoy the ambiguous nature of a couple questions either. not sure what those that work in audit think. the Ninja SIMs are reasonable practice, but I also added a short list of FAR-ish topics to study if I fail b/c the AUD sims always have journal entries/adjustment exercises. Depreciation, Equity Method, Investments (LT vs ST and accounting for their unrealized gain), Sales, Inventory, Allowance/Bad Debt, Dividends.

Rivens: your testlets were tough and the sims were near impossible, so you might have done better than you think 🙂 I remember laughing out loud when I saw how stupid hard my audit Sims were – I almost quit and left the testing center lol.

Q3 results are released in three looooooooong weeks, so stay positive. This is your last exam right? If I were you I would study a bit every day just in case you failed, so you stay sharp for a potential rematch, but in the mean-time, just stay calm. I bet you scored in the mid or high 80s judging by how much you studied and how hard you thought it was.

And of course I'm always a fan of drinking and sulking lol :p Just stay sharp and don't give up, you're almost there.

@Rivens- I agree that this exam is harder for people who are not auditors. That's probably why you see a lot of people fail multiple times and others scoring in the high 90's. I hope I did well enough on the mcq to offset some of the sims, but the second testlet was brutal and the third felt more medium than hard. I'm just not sure how else to prepare if I have to take it again. I've been through all the questions and sims for both Ninja and Roger. For my retake I went through all the Ninja MCQ and was averaging 86 and trending 92. Didn't get to the review stage since it expired a week before my exam and had to use only Roger. I may have to bite the bullet and buy Gleim's test bank. I heard they have really good sims, but spending $250 is pretty steep for one section.
