Need suggestion for two week notice

I need some suggestion this time from everyone. I finished my CPA exam last month and sent my application for the CPA license. At the same time a recruiter contacted me and set me up for interviews. I quickly got offers and accepted one of them. We are moving to another area soon.

One of the reasons that I look for another job is because my husband couldn’t find a job around this area, so this offer is perfect for us to leave this area. However, i feel the firm might take it personally. Tomorrow I need to give 2 weeks notice. I am kind of worried and feel like my firm might just let me go tomorrow.

Always talk to your immediate supervisor first, and have a letter prepared for HR. Thank them for the opportunity, and explain the relocation. They may ask you to leave immediately but has anyone else there given a 2 week and been asked to leave? If they do dismiss you immediately they have to give you your final pay and accrued vacation immediately, btw. In my experience it's rare someone isn't allowed to complete their last 2 weeks. Congratulations on the new job!

@mla11692, we don't have HR, it is very small (14 employees). I am pretty close to the managing partner and probably will talk to him first. Someone else left last year and they didn't let her go right away. Thank you for the suggestion.

    Congrats on the new job!!

When I quit, I gave them 3 weeks since I wasn't leaving for a new job. They asked if I would train the new person and I did that my final week. I need more job references, so I wanted to keep everyone happy. Was a bit of a squeeze to fit both of us in my tiny cubicle.

@circadian malfunction, Thanks! I want to make everyone happy as well, but I need to take care of myself and my family first, I just don't see myself growing there and I hope they will understand.

Before I got my degree I saw people get let go all the time after giving notice. But where I work now with a degree people finish their 2 weeks. Personally I finished all my 2 weeks with no problem, before my degree.

I would focus on the move aspect in giving your 2 weeks' notice. “My husband and I have decided to relocate to _______ (or just “to relocate” if you don't want to tell them where you're going), so unfortunately I am resigning my position here, my last day will be Nov 4th.” No reason to bring up things that will cause you to leave on an unpleasant note – like lack of opportunity for progression – when you can stick to things which are more just “facts of life”, like moving. Still write the letter, even if there wasn't a formal HR department, just address it to the managing partner or whoever you consider most appropriate. Be sure to thank them for the opportunities they've given you, etc., be as positive as possible, cause there's a good chance that your experience at this firm is the only reason you got your job at the new place.

Whether people work out their 2 weeks or leave before its done seems to vary based on the firm, the work load at the time, etc. In the greater scheme of things, whether you get paid the next 2 weeks or not isn't that critical. In the short run, I'm sure cash is very tight while moving! But try to focus on the fact that in 10 years, 2 weeks' pay won't matter that much, and that 2 weeks at home could help you prepare for moving better. If they say “Thanks for letting us know, you can go home today”, you're not getting fired, they're just accepting your resignation as effective immediately. So, don't let it bother you if that happens.

However, if prior history with the firm (the other person you saw leave) is that people work out their 2 weeks, then hopefully your worries are baseless and you're gonna work a looooong day today and 10 more of them before your 2 weeks' notice is over. 🙂

@Lilla, yes that is pretty much what I did. I just gave the notice earlier and they being very supportive and I cried. After college, this is my first job and I really grew up here. It is not easy for me to say bye, but luckily, they are very nice about it and said that I can still come back.

Glad it's worked out well. 🙂 Leaving jobs is hard. I've had some jobs with some issues that I was very happy to leave, but it was still hard to leave the job. My family moved a lot growing up (like cross-country every few years), so I've said a lot of “goodbyes” through my life and don't like when I have to say more. 😐 However, it sounds like they recognize that they should appreciate the dedication you've shown them, and are being supportive as you move on in the next stage of your life.

Best wishes for the new job and location! 🙂 Hope it fulfills all your dreams!

@Lilla, yea, I am lucky that things are working out. I called MA board of Accountancy and the lady said that she probably will mail the license next week. Hopefully I will get the license before we move.

I'm glad it worked out and it sounds like you didn't burn any bridges. Even if you never intend to return, it never hurts to have them as a reference down the road. Best wishes and I hope your husband is able to find work in your new locale.
