I recently got an offer from Deloitte but they want me to start by July 5th which I cannot because I still two more classes to take and the earliest date i can start is by the end of July. Is it okay to negotiate the start date with HR? is there any risk that they will take the offer back? How do you negotiate?

I think that they will work with you. I would call the recruiter directly and talk to them about it. Don't present it as a counter, but rather ask if it would be a possibility to extend the start date to a day at the end of July. You have a valid reason and from my experience they would rather you finish your class and do good than start and risk jeopardizing your grade.

You're only asking for a few weeks and you're asking for educational reasons, so it's hard to imagine a Big 4, or any other large company, having a problem. There may be considerations with onboarding schedules but if you're flexible they should be. For example, my current employer onboards in two week cycles, so when I asked to push my start date one week because of vacation plans, they suggested a two week delay instead. Done deal!

Bottom line, there's no harm to ask.

I ran into a similar problem. I am starting at PwC. I was told when I was hired June 13th would be the start date. I asked to start later and they said “Sorry, no exceptions, everyone must start at the same time. “ A few months later the recruiter calls me and asks me about my EAD card and mentions Oh, yes, I have a note that you can’t start *that* early.

I finally asked her when the earliest I would start and the latest I would start. She said earliest July, latest end of October. So who knows, The problem may correct itself. So call them and hear what they say. But be surprised for some resistance.
