Hello! I finally passed the CPA exam in May and am officially licensed. I currently work in Internal Audit, and am considering the CIA certification. I have heard that it’s beneficial to take the CIA right after the CPA exam since a lot of the material overlaps.

Now that the exam has gone from 4 to 3 parts, can anyone suggest a good 2013 review course? I used Becker for the CPA and loved it…but I’m clueless for the CIA.

    Thanks!

Yea there are CPE requirements to keep up on. Nothing complicated and the tests (At least the one I have taken) are legit a cakewalk compared to CPA exams. Not that they are easy persay but anything has to be better than CPA exams!

Just took the 3rd and final (for me) part of the four part exam. It was a complete joke. Didn't even read the book this time. Just did the IIA practice questions (between 60-100) for each section last night and passed. It was a breeze. Doesn't even register in comparison to the CPA. Only reason I got this “certification” is because my work recommended it. For those of you still studying, don't let it stress you out, I think the state drivers licensing exam was tougher than the 3 exams. Good luck.

I found the info which says that “if a candidate hasn't completed the certification process within 4 years, all fees and exam parts will be forfeited”. Not sure what it means exactly but to me it sounds like you need to meet the work experience within those 4 years???

BTW, the info on CIA is so hard to find!!!!

I also finally discovered that you have 180 days to schedule the exam after you register and if you fail, you can't retake it for 90 days.

    FAR: 81 (May 2013)
    BEC: 81 (July 2013)
    REG: 83 (August 2013)

Sorry I haven't checked in- congrats @smp!!!!! Awesome to hear that you passed one. I pushed my first exam (part 3) back to November. I just found out I got a scholarship from a local organization that agreed to pay for my exam fees.

@BobRossFan- Is it really that easy? I'm guessing the old parts 3 and 4 have some of the same stuff as in the new part 3. I'm kind of freaked out seeing all of that financial stuff in Part 3. I'm taking that one first because I recently passed the CPA exam. I have the Gleim materials. How many hours would you recommend studying?

@memmy – Yeah, it's a cakewalk…especially compared to the CPA exam. CIA Part 3 is like what FAR/BEC would be if they had a baby and it was a little “special”. The financial reporting/accounting knowledge required of you is really remedial stuff. I'd focus more on the problem solving type diagrams (pareto, fishbone, etc), because those are less intuitive and require that you actually know it.I wouldn't stress about it. You'll be fine.

Study time wise, I would say if you have the time, read through the book and work the questions a few times. But you know yourself better than anyone else…you should have a good idea of how much time you think you'll need. Everyone is different. I'm a really good test taker, so I usually don't study as much and I get through the exams pretty quickly, but you have to do what feels right. You passed all 4 parts of the CPA exam, so I'd be willing to bet that you'll be just fine. Good luck to you!

    @BobRossFan-

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll get going through that book. I have a month and a half…and I'm so over studying. Hoping to just knock it out 🙂 I think I've become a better test taker having gone through this damn thing already. You definitely gave me some confidence though. Thanks.

Thought I'd let everyone know about my Part 3 experience. I read through the book and did about 200 questions. I was ready for a lot of financial and managerial accounting. Not what happened. I did not get a single accounting related question. Everything was about management styles and other things I'm not familiar with.

What happened? Did Gleim get the merging of Part 3 and Part 4 into the new Part 3 wrong? The study materials were completely off. Anyone else have this happen to them? I'm ashamed I failed my first part of the CIA exam after squashing the CPA! Onto Part 1 while I wait out the 90 days before I can retake…

Haven't taken the CPA exam, although I am sure it is harder. I have however, sat and passed all parts of the CIA exam. I wouldn't agree with some on here, that state it is a “cakewalk”. It isn't. I do agree that it probably pales in comparison to the CPA exam.

Gleim was great for the CPA, and everyone is praising it for the CIA.

Question: What's the average study time for the CIA, in order to pass? And do you need the actual CPA license to get the credit for whatever CIA part?

@ mystical guy, (Correct me if i'm wrong ) … but I think that in the new 3 part system, they do not waiver any part for having any certificate, you gotta pass them all…

    No signature needed.

Passed And got my license too ..

    Hi Everyone!

I am all done with the CIA so maybe I can give a bit of info.

Since it is 3 parts now they do not waive a part since you are a CPA.

Parts 1 and 2 were honestly a cakewalk for me. I had a life, I ran, I studied and passed both with out much trouble. Then came part 3. Part 3 is a beast. Like rivals CPA exam beast. So much material. I ended up using Gleim and the IIA learning system to pass that baby. It is not one to skimp on studying. I probably did a few thousand practice questions. The key for me for part 3 was mixing up all the questions since it covered so many topics I needed to make sure I could jump around on subjects when it came test day.

I spent 2.5 months studying for part 3 but in all reality I spent 1 month seriously studying for part 3. I gave myself 2 months ish for the other two parts but it was not terribly intense studying the entire 2 months.

I took and passed part 3 Feb 15 so if any one has other general exam questions the entire process is still fresh in my head.

Congrats on passing the CIA exam, smp!

I'm thinking about doing that as well once I'm done with the CPA exam (which could be today, waiting on BEC!)

    FAR: 65, 77!
    AUD: 72, 72, 80!
    REG: 64, 84!
    BEC: 83!
