I’m taking BEC on August 12th (my NTS expires on the 15th). I have Roger, but am not using it for BEC. I have heard many complaints about his BEC and did not want to risk it. So, I am using Gleim (textbook only) for it, and only using Roger’s practice questions. I don’t know how the new BEC SIMs have been for people….any thoughts? I do like Roger’s videos, but having watched every minute of every last one for FAR and AUD, in retrospect I think I liked them more than I actually learned from them. I don’t know how many people skip videos – it seems like I’ve heard of some who just work test bank questions (MCQ mostly) or do only Ninja with zero videos or audios or anything else supplemental. And then there are those who say “I never read a review textbook, I only worked practice questions.” I definitely need a review textbook for BEC and REG because I know next to nothing about most of the areas covered in them. Anyhow, just curious if anyone else just skips the vids.

Gleim has 20 (twenty) study units and I have about 10 weeks to get thru them – have to do 2 a week. My boss actually told me, after I told him that I spent 3 months or more preparing for FAR and AUD (each), “that’s way too long to prepare for a CPA exam. You need to do it in 3-4 weeks.” Well sorry, I don’t have the brain that my boss does.

    Thanks,
    CL

Hmm, if he's talking about BEC, then I have to agree. BEC has probably the least amount of material and though it varies, I wouldn't spend more than 6 weeks on it. I studied for it full-time and thought 5 weeks was more than adequate. You don't want to stretch your studying SO LONG that you forget all the minute details that BEC has. I don't know about the new SIMs for BEC though.

REG, though, is another story. However, I think 8 weeks is more than sufficient for FAR and REG. Again, you don't want to stretch your studying so much that you start forgetting. This is saying that you should studying at least 20-25 hours per week.

    AUD - 83
    BEC - 80
    FAR - 83
    REG - 78
    BEC - 80 (Roger + NINJA MCQ + WTB)

    FAR - 72; 83 (Roger + NINJA MCQ)

    AUD - 83 (Roger + NINJA MCQ + WTB)

    REG - 52; 78 (Roger + NINJA MCQ)

    Ethics - 68, 96 (how I dislike you)

    AUD (9/9/16)

I think 10 weeks for REG, 12 weeks for FAR, and 8 weeks each for BEC and AUD is probably the best, otherwise, you start to forget. I took almost 3 months studying for BEC because it was my first section and it was too much time…

Yes. Who has time to knock out FAR or REG (or even AUD?) in 4 weeks? Unless you are experienced already in all the areas they cover, or you just have an IQ that is out of the troposphere?
My boss took the exams in 1989-90….I think they were easier then, were they not? But, the rule back then was that if you didn't pass two, you didn't get to take any more until you had
two passes under your belt. And, there weren't as many SIMs (like 2 per section, at most 3.)

Hopefully I can knock out BEC by end of July. That's a little over 2 months. My biggest problem has been retention. Not so much for AUD but definitely for FAR. I definitely needed 12 weeks for FAR – 31 chapters is a lot to do in only 8 weeks unless you study 24/7. And most of us don't have that luxury.

I'm curious as to what people have to say about the new BEC SIMs. I'd rather have SIMs than MCQ. I suck hard at MCQ. I hope it's not MCQ that keeps me from passing ANY of these exams.
On my last two attempts, my MCQs only got easier. Bad sign. It's a slap in the face actually. “Oh, you can't get a good score on a medium testlet so we're not gonna waste your time again,
we'll just give you easy stuff from now on.” Ohhhh welllll. I guess I'm gonna have to study more MCQs. Yawn!!!

I'm using GLEIM and the videos and audio lectures in GLEIM are horrendous! So monotone and formal (people who talk super formal get on my nerves)…. I've heard a lot of great things about Roger's videos and have contemplated getting them for FAR and REG ONLY IF I can't get the concepts while doing what I'm doing now. But then again, I can't watch videos as I just get super distracted about what people are wearing, whether someone's voice is annoying, ugly/attractive facial features, background objects…. Yeah, it's a waste of time since I can't concentrate so I just stick to reading, answering a bunch of MCQ's, and making flashcards (not taking notes).

I also use Superfast CPA's study hacks, notes, and audio lectures since he actually talks like a normal person and his voice doesn't get on my nerves. I'm very imaginative, so I prefer audio lectures to videos because I'm able to envision things, draw them out, make a flashcard, and remember them in my own way.

Check out the link below for study tips. Number #4 Active Recall mentions how videos, audio lectures, and note taking are passive learning and not very effective. Superfast CPA's study hacks mention active learning techniques and suggests making your own flashcards as opposed to purchasing someone else's.

@loveandbeloved – yes that's exactly right, videos are like passive studying. I think FAR and AUD were easier for me to get through because I'd studied pretty much everything in them to some degree before doing the review courses on Roger. And in retrospect, I didn't really need to watch so many of the vids, probably should have only watched the ones for difficult topics.
I never took many notes in college, and I took no notes on the videos. Where I took notes was while doing the MCQs and SIMs. Anyhow, I'm just now getting into Gleim's BEC – I did not purchase the Gleim program though. Somebody gave me a publisher review copy of the 2015 textbook. The writing style of Gleim is very old school and yes, I did jump onto his website and some of those videos look like they're taught by very geeky people! haha That's one good thing about Roger's vids, he's not a geek, he's hilarious and smart and funny. It's just that content-wise, most of his vids just kinda…aren't that helpful. But, I only speak from my own perspective, I think most people do like and get a lot out of his vids.

@crazyleon-I found that listening to Becker lectures first gives the framework for going over the material later in the book, sort of to get my feet wet. For the conceptual stuff, like BEC I found listening to lectures extremely beneficial as a review tool as well. So maybe instead of watching the videos you can listen to them while you are driving or something?

@anyatver – It's hard to tell how much one really learns from videos. I wish I knew. I don't think I learned much from the ones for AUD on Roger. And, I don't think I will watch many of them for BEC, if for no other reason than I don't have much time to study for it. It just seems that videos take up a lot of time that I should be spending on working the practice questions or re-reading the difficult parts of the textbook. Listening to videos while driving would be interesting….but I don't think my laptop gets wireless in my car. 🙂 I think Roger has some audio files or something but not sure how to go about listening to them on a car sound system.
