    Hello Everyone!

Kind of need advice if possible. Ive been a lurker for some time and decided to join Another71 today. Well heres my story.

I graduated in 2016 with a BA in Health Science. I was initially supposed to graduate in 2014 but life got in the way in addition to me switching my major (stupidly from HS to econ then back to HS again). Anyway, while in school I had a job in construction accounting. So that’s where my experience in accounting began. After graduating undergrad, I moved back to my home town and got another job in accounting, this time as a staff accountant at a non profit. I learned so much, and it peaked my interest into obtaining my CPA license. After about a year or so of living with my parents I decided to begin applying to jobs. I was able to get a job in DC ( I went to school there). The position pays well and I feel like it is good experience and its with a pretty decently ranked public accounting firm.

My question is what would the best route to take be in terms of obtaining my CPA license in DC? I think the CPA with the experience with the accounting firm I work for now would set me up pretty nicely. I’ve began taking courses at the community college in maryland. 9 credits. I was thinking I could take the required courses and take the exams then maybe obtain an MBA or MACC after.

Also I’ve looked at the requirements for the DC CPA exam…does anyone know what is meant by “accounting concentration”?

I’m a little confused on what exactly to do because I don’t necessarily know any accounting non trads. PLEASE HELP 🙁

You could contact your state Board and find out exactly what you could do. I did that before starting my MBA program since I knew my undergrad wasn't accredited the way they wanted. They looked at the school and my program, and helped me make sure I had all the necessary classes. I have an MBA with an accounting concentration, which was only 3 courses. Of course, I picked up more for my electives and a few besides that so I could get the necessary credits.

Accounting concentration means they are accounting courses which normally start with ACC in the course code and have something accounting in the course name. Maybe this link can give you some ideas: https://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/cpa/cpa150hour.htm
That's for NY State though. You can check with your state board to make sure you take courses that are acceptable to them. Also, your schools can also advise you on which course you can take to meet the CPA 150 hours. You can take accounting courses from different schools but make sure they dont duplicate. Community schools are cost effective and some courses are offered online. Check this forum, there are many threads where people discuss how to obtain credits for CPA license.

@mlam Thank you for the reply! I will give the State Board a call. I am unsure of whether “Bachelor degree or above with accounting concentration (120 credit hours)” means that my undergrad or masters degree must be accounting concentrated. The courses that I am taking now at the community college are accounting concentrated buuuut they arent a part of a degree program.
