Out of public accounting – Less opportunities for tax than audit?

    Hi all,

I’m currently working as an auditor at a mid-tier public accounting firm and considering to switch over to tax. I’ve been working in both tax and audit about an year at this firm and I’ve realized audit is not really a good fit for me (I’m an introvert/not actively socialized). I’ve been approached by tax people within the firm saying there is an opportunity for me to work exclusively in tax if I’m interested. Although I think tax would be a better fit for me, I’m not sure whether this is the right move. I don’t plan to stay in public accounting for my entire career (I’ll probably leave public accounting after a few years of experience and go to private). I’ve heard tax people working in public accounting tend to have less out-of-public-accounting job opportunities than audit people do. I really need some insights before I make this huge decision! Any tips will be appreciated!!

Considering every business, person, and non profit organization needs to file a tax return I'd say there is way more opportunity. There is a CPA around me I know who only does tax returns at his firm and rakes in well over 100g a year. I also see a lot of business like GE have tax openings.

I would say the scariest thing about tax is if they ever simplified the tax code who knows what would happen.

Posted this in another thread but many people leave public and go private, including those in tax. You will also get a nice pay raise when you do. You will have no trouble finding work outside of public with being “tax” oriented.

    AUD - 94
    REG - 86
    BEC - 86

You won't have trouble finding a job after public but those jobs will be tax based.

bump. also interested in what people would say because I already made the switch from audit to tax. just because you are doing tax it doesn't mean you won't touch accounting aspect of it. also you still need to talk to people. overall better fit for introvert compared to audit though. the hours doesn't get better.

i'm also worried that there's not a lot options after public.

My mind can't comprehend where you guys come up with the fact that there won't be TONS of chances after public if you work in tax.

My tax manager said he received multiple offers a year to go work in private, and his situation is very common from what I've seen and heard.
